I can't open the story, but it looks like OWH reporting Staples retail store on 78th & Dodge to close Jan 31.

Between the internet and business fulfillment (delivery vans), I'm surprised that the office supply places still have the retail presence that they do.

Office Depot's strategy of downsizing was smart. I think there is still a place for office supply stores as a lot of small businesses get their supplies at these type of places. They don't need the warehouse buildings anymore though. Keep it small, use the space efficiently(no one is buying office furniture there) and they can survive for a while longer.

Interesting....
So an Office Depot commercial just came on Pandora and flat out called out staples on 78th and Dodge for closing. Said the Staples on 78th and Dodge couldn't keep up with Office Depot...

Kind of fits what this company is doing. About a year ago they opened a retail store in Des Moines. Recently they opened one is Sioux Falls. Omaha is not listed as a SOON location but wouldn't surprise me.

If you have paid much attention to sports advertising as well as other spots over the last couple years you have seen their adds.

Duluth Trading would be a good addition. Clothes that look nice and are really durable and quality outdoor tools. They have useful knives and other gear that people like day hikers, photographers, and construction management people would use.

There's a Duluth trading company going into that strip somewhere. Not sure if its that site, or up where backwoods used to be...

The vast majority of recent permit activity in that immediate area is for 151 N 078th st, the old CompUSA/Staples building. There was only one sign permit pulled for the strip mall to the North of it.

That seems such a weird location. You would think they'd put it in a more retail-oriented location. I mean, I guess Beverly Hills Plaza is a stone's throw away, but that's just a weird spot in general...

Seriously??? What are you talking about. When is the last time you have been to that area? That whole area is retail! It's part of Tower Plaza which runs from Cass to Dodge, probably has +/- 20 retail businesses in it. Like you said Beverly is to the west, what whole Hobby Lobby Complex to the east, the Dick Blick/Panara strip center to the SW, Men's Warehouse to the south. There is nothing but retail all around there!

Meh. That corner to me is just awkward. I work at the hospital, but for some reason in my mind I imagined that place much more spread out and sparse.

I think its a prime location. Granted the intersection is a little awkward because 78th isn't perpendicular to dodge on the north side. The good things about that are fantastic visibility, There is a light with a left turn arrow for eastbound traffic, there is a driveway before 78th street for westbound traffic. If Dodge is backed up, you can head north to Cass or south Pacific. With that creek behind the building, nothing is every going to block your view of the hundreds of thousands of cars that drive by there every day.

I totally agree. That intersection may be a little cattywampus, but the visibility on a major route in Omaha is hard to beat.

Good use of the word cattywampus! One thing about that intersection that bothers me is north-bound cars on 78th have a turn lane, but no left-turn light is provided. Omaha seems to do this too often. It's tough to turn west-bound onto Dodge with on-coming southbound cattywampus traffic coming right at you.

Great location. The store will be a good addition to men's clothing options. It has some actually useful outdoor stuff as well. It will be interesting to see how Backwoods reacts to this addition. It has been a long time since I shopped in BW, but as I recall they were pretty proud of their stuff. I gave up and moved on to Canfields. Having a DT here in town will give both a run for their money in clothes.

That corner is very awkward. If you turn in off of Dodge street, you have to make all sorts of turns and stops to get where you want to get in that strip mall.

If you turn off Dodge, isn't it pretty easy to just turn into the lot?

I used to shop there when it was Staples and game from East bound Dodge. I can't recall ever having any issues getting into the lot....

The visibility is worth way more than any difficulty getting into the parking lot.

Lots of demo going on here. The "Tower" over the front door is ripped apart, and it looks like they are adding windows to the southwest corner.

Sounds like they're going to make the building more inviting, at least. I've never liked retail buildings that offer no glimpse of what's going on inside.

And this one was even worse that most because you couldn't even see in from just outside the arches because they had a wall and 90 degree turn immediately inside the front door.

I went Wednesday. Not bad. Some nice basic polos and stuff. I realize it's work wear but I was looking at some cargo shorts, they felt like burlap. Hoping they soften some if you wash them.
