A $7 million fundraising campaign has been announced to finance an addition to the Council Bluffs YMCA that would make it the second largest in the Omaha-Council Bluffs organization.
“We need more space to serve families and improve our ability to serve preschool program participants,” said Director Leo McIntosh.
The project will include a 22,000-square-foot, two-story addition where currently there is a parking lot, directly to the south of the swimming pool, McIntosh said. A second story would be added above the swimming pool for a walking and running track. A children’s swimming pool would be added to the east of the current pool. . . .
McIntosh said the organization did a community needs assessment and “got a lot of feedback to keep the YMCA downtown.”
To build a new facility anywhere else would be more expensive, he added, estimating that new construction would cost $10 million. . . .
