The end of a 75-year-old era may be drawing near.
Lakeshore Country Club has been officially listed for sale.
According to club president Ron Sealock, the Lund Co. of Omaha has been selected to pursue buyers for the 117-acre facility located on the north shore of Lake Manawa.
"Our membership recognizes the changes in the social and entertainment attitudes within our community, and they have instructed the Lakeshore Board of Directors to pursue buyers for the property," Sealock said in a release. "It is our hope to attract investors to purchase Lakeshore with the intent to continue operating the property as some type of golf/social entity."
Sealock noted the recent sale of Skyline Woods Country Club in west Omaha to an Elkhorn developer who plans to incorporate it into a new 27-hole golf course project.
However, he pointed out that the membership will entertain all viable offers, including those that may include redevelopment of the property.
Sealock said that for now it will be business as usual for the club.
"The club will remain open until such time a transaction is completed," he said. "We plan to continue our services to our current members and their guests."
Sealock stated that the club will soon be announcing an open invitation to all citizens of Council Bluffs and southwest Iowa to enjoy and use the facility this coming year. The public will be invited to enjoy use of the club through a variety of special promotions.
He did not offer any timeline for the sale of the property, but a letter sent to Lakeshore members stated that a professional appraisal of the property should be completed within the next three weeks.

Interesting, and it was supposed to be a pretty nice little course, and not too expensive.
It couldn't be that people would rather gamble...?

They could follow the path of West Des Moines and call themselves 'West Council Bluffs'... although to some I guess that doesn't help with regards to that 'reputation' thing.
I could have envisioned Iowa allowing a casino in Carter Lake if Nebraska had approved one of the expanded gambling initiatives and built one downtown themselves. However, I would be VERY surprised if it were to happen now.

I thought it was only Nebraskan's that gambled at the casinos!Jon wrote:It couldn't be that people would rather gamble...?
Seriously though, there's probably some truth to that statement, although I think the biggest problem is that they haven't been replacing older members with enough younger members. They haven't been terribly proactive in recruiting new members, imo.
It will be interesting to see what becomes of this property.

Carter Lake only has 3,200 people. It only has nice parts on the lake. I used to live east of CL and the was like a small town oblivious to anything going on around. They sell those things that go around license plates that say, "Omaha and Council Bluffs are the outskirts of Carter Lake." It's trashy and so are most of the people. Many people claim to have been around when the MO river moved over and made Cl what it was in the 70's. Yeah right it was more like the 1870's. If we ever did aquire the place we should level it all, clean up the lake, and make a new condo place or something.
I heard CL is still Iowa because of a mistake AT&T made. I can't recall the mistake but I heard that from a few credible Lakers.

Don't let them kid you, theres more money in Carter Lake than you would believe.Finn wrote:Hey, Carter Lake has made serious strides over the past ten years. It was always a less affluent area with little economic infrastructure. They have developed the Owen Pakway office complex, a hotel and all of the upscale housing along the lake.

Lakeshore Country Club Sale Final
Well, the golf course stays open for now, but the contract stipulates that part of the property can be developed, given certain conditions. I would look for some lakeside development in the relatively near future.

An old thread, but a related story in today's paper. Still don't foresee them lasting more than a couple years:
Council Bluffs Country Club battles for golfing business
Council Bluffs Country Club battles for golfing business
The top goal is increasing memberships and usage by the members and the community, and they plan to do that by providing members with a good value in the club. The Council Bluffs County Club has about 350 members and needs to increase that to 500 or 550, he said.
The club will be open to nonmembers for lunch and dinner as it works to fill its membership goal. It also will offer ladies days and couples' golf leagues, all in the hope of attracting more families and especially young families. Robison knows that with all the competition, it can be a tough sell. Robison emphasizes that there are a variety of membership packages available at competitive prices. . . the new owners' goal is to see that the property continues to be used for its current recreational and social purposes.
