The Iowa Department of the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War has announced that Council Bluffs will be the site of a nationally recognized Civil War Sesquicentennial Event. . . .
On May 18th, 2013, one hundred fifty years to the day since he died, Kinsman and the other Civil War veterans buried around the Monument will be honored for their sacrifices during the four bloodiest years of our nations’ history.
Sponsored by Governor Kirkwood Camp #4 of Council Bluffs and Colonel Kinsman Camp #23 of Atlantic, the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War are honored to host the event, which starts at 2 p.m. at the monument.
The ceremony will begin with a cannon shot from a Civil War cannon. Among the guest speakers will be Mayor Tom Hanafan; Mrs. Kori Nelson, director of the Dodge House; and Richard Grim, the department commander of the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War. The keynote speaker will be Mrs. Janet Glasgow Mulshine, great-great granddaughter of Colonel Samuel Glasgow, also a veteran of the 4th Iowa, Kinsman’s successor and distant relative.
"Destiny is not a matter of chance, it is a matter of choice; it is not a thing to be waited for, it is a thing to be achieved."
