Construction continues, as walls are starting to go up on the site. Â With a target opening now of November, they're going to have to really hump it to get the store ready even by then.

Infrastructure on the adjacent hotel (and water park?) is being put in, and vertical construction should be seen by end of June, I would estimate.

I drove by there last night, and counted 4 cranes in the area. They were partaking in the Bass Pro Shop construction and the Horseshoe casino construction. Once they start working on they new hotel, there is going to be a lot of action going on down there in terms of construction (not that there already isn't).

I took this pic quick yesterday around noon. The area is going to be booming with all the stuff going on. Now CB just needs to improve the look of the routes to there.

Swift, I think it's supposed to be 6 stories... not sure exactly what that equates to in feet though.

Wow that really looks like they got a lot done in just one day. Maybe that date isn't going to be so hard to reach. I am excited about all of this growth in this region as well. I also think that they do need to improve some of the roads leading there. I can still remember just a few years ago riding a bike through there with just weeds and grass in the area. Now....Mid America Center, Star Cinema, The Plaza, Bass Pro Shops, Country Inn and Suites, soon another hotel, and the Horseshoe Casino. Gerat to see.

Big ups to the West Dodge crew.. they're reppin Omaha well. I've said it before, but I will never ever understand why it takes a year or two, sometimes more, to widen a mile stretch of road. I could do it in two months tops. I feel sorry for all you guys driving down Maple.. how long has it been now?

Anyways, I'm glad some projects are scurrying along. This is how it should be done.

Final landscaping plans are now approved:

Officials of Bass Pro Shops will be allowed to build a large wetland area at its new store now under construction in Council Bluffs.

The wetlands, which was approved by the city's Planning Commission earlier this month, was given the final nod Monday night by the City Council.

It would cover more than two acres on the southeast corner of the store.

Native grasses would be planted there and fallen dead trees would be laid there also, said a landscaping consultant.

"(The plan is) to make it look as natural as possible," said Ted Spaid.

Migratory birds would be attracted to the site, he added.

Of course, the resident bump-on-a-log had to weigh in with his dissent:

The council's vote was not unanimous.

Councilman Dave Tobias expressed concern that the original plan to build a two-acre lake was washed away.

"People were excited about Bass Pro, and now it's changing," he said during the discussion. "We had a business agreement. We had a vision, and now it's going to change. I don't think it's proper."

Spaid said that water management issues made the lake impractical to build.

Mr. Tobias just never gets it....

Exterior work is coming along nicely on the building, and at least some of the surrounding lots have been paved already. They are still giong to be pushing it to the edge for a November 3 opening. If anybody is interested in gaining employment....

Bass Pro Shops plans Altoona store

The Missouri-based outdoor sports store will be built along Interstate 80 east of Des Moines. It will anchor a 200-acre retail and commercial development, including restaurants, big box stores, specialty shops and offices . . .

And for those gaming enthusiasts out there, it's still not too late to win a Wii from Bass Pro Shops, they're giving one away per day until Christmas Eve, head on over and get entered!

Watch out, West Des Moines. Altoona has reeled in a big one.

Bass Pro Shops, a Missouri-based outdoor sports chain, plans to put a store at the southeast corner of Interstate Highway 80 and U.S. Highway 65. It will anchor a 200-acre retail and commercial development, including big box retailers, small specialty shops, offices, restaurants and a possibly a hotel, developers said. . .

Bass Pro Shops will cover more than three acres. The retail center will be comparable in size to Jordan Creek Town Center which sits on 200 acres in West Des Moines. . . .

The city is working with businessman Mike Whalen to develop the rest of the 200 acres. Whalen, who owns Heart of America Restaurants & Inns based in Davenport, said he envisions a lifestyle-center feel with pedestrian walkways, green areas, several big box stores, restaurants, specialty shops and other businesses built over several years. . .

An employee at Bass Pro in Council Bluffs told me the other day that the Council Bluffs store is the worst performer in the entire Bass Pro chain. Â No talk of closing it, however.

Exactly, and up until a few weeks ago, online maps such as MSN Maps, MapQuest and Google Maps couldn't locate Bass Pro Shop's address. Â Yahoo Maps still doesn't show the proper streets around the MAC and Bass Pro Shop. Â Google Maps is the only one with recent enough imagery to even show Bass Pro Shops building. Â That doesn't help people find you either (although the interstate exit situation doesn't help at all).

I would think if people could find the Horseshoe Casino and Mid America Center, they could find Bass Pro.

I think Bass Pro draws more out of towners. Â I just think its too bad that there is industrial areas on both ends of the development.

It would help a great deal if all the empty store / business bays in front of the Mac would at leat have more than Famose Dave's in them. Â On top of them just being empty and not pulling anyone in it just looks bad. Â With everything going on on the other side of the interstate it is only going to get more difficult to fill these unless they drop the rent.

Oh for goodness sakes! Â The place towers over the neighborhood, and you can't miss seeing it if you are driving on I29/80.They simply overestimated the market for their products in the Omaha area (so did Cabela's). Â Their biggest ticket items are powerboats. Â How many big lakes are there near Omaha where you can use a powerboat? Â The answer is, almost none.

Its like the Kearney arch. Heck yeah you can see it, but where is the exit?

I don't buy the "power" boat thing. Â They sell a lot of fishing boats. Â I see tons of boats on all the lakes around here all the time, and if you do buy a "power" boat, there is the Missouri River right there plus I have gone skiing on Manaua, Carter, Hawaiian Village, Wood cliff, as well as the river and I know there are a bunch more lakes that people do ski on.

That's an important factor too, and slowly but surely, more amenities are going into the area that should help draw more people down there.

The bottom line is that Bass isn't doing all that well. Â Maybe the new motels opening or under construction in the area will help. Â That is the expectation of the Bass people, in any event.

I would assume it was a bribe to get them to open a store there. $800K for heating and cooling? That come with wifi & a hot tub? By the way, that blurb about the Iowa West Foundation covering the cost? Those are in large part Nebraska gambling dollars that should have been spent at Nebraska casinos. Gambling with the good life can bewail gambling all they want but those are Nebraska dollars not being spent in Nebraska. And that's not snark.

I'm guessing there will be a decision one of these days either to close the CB Bass Pro, or the Omaha Cabella's. Wouldn't surprise me if Iowa West and CB bend over backwards to do everything for Bass Pro.

Yes, the city owns the building and leases it to Bass Pro on a 20 year lease to start. That was part of the sweetner to attract Bass Pro to open there.

Both Bass Pro and Cabela's were given good incentives to develop at their present locations. I remember Scheel's was pretty vocal about the ones given to Cabela's considering the money Scheel's spent on their own store in Omaha without tax payer help.
