Old Walnut Grove School Property

Post by skinzfan23 »

Former school would make way for 14 homes
A school closed last year in northwestern Council Bluffs could eventually become a cluster of homes.
The Council Bluffs Community School District is considering selling the former Walnut Grove Elementary School, 2920 Ave. J, with the intent of demolishing the building to provide space for Iowa Western Community College’s construction technology program to build 14 houses.

NeighborWorks helps potential homeowners who would otherwise struggle to put a down payment on a house. The organization targets those making between 60 percent and 80 percent of the average area median income, and it requires its clients to obtain a mortgage and meet other qualifications.
For the homes built with Iowa Western, NeighborWorks provides a down payment that is forgiven if the house is maintained for a decade. The nonprofit also offers a scholarship fund built up by the savings on Iowa Western-built houses as well as discounts from contractor supplies and seller commissions.
Bruckner said she believes using the property for homes is something the community members around Walnut Grove will be happy to hear, and she said he hopes the improvements move forward sooner than later. She said the plan is for work on houses to take place over the course of seven years, finishing two houses each year.
