To help with ice-water rescues, among other things, the department purchased a hovercraft at a cost of roughly $60,000 last summer.
“It flies, so it can go places where a boat can’t go,” said CBFD Technical Services Captain Jason Sorenson. “It flies 9 inches off the ground, so it doesn’t matter what’s underneath us. It will go anywhere. It can travel over water, grass, ice and snow.”
The CBFD is one of only 35 fire departments that use a hovercraft. James said there are more than 45,000 fire departments in the U.S.

CBFD's hovercraft to aid in water rescues
Re: CBFD buys Hovercraft
It sounds like another example of "boys and their toys" but if it saves lives then it's well worth it.

In the article they stated that they already used it once. Unfortunately it was for a body recovery instead of a rescue.

I might buy one of those video camera/drones for myself for Christmas. Hows that for a news flash?
