The local grocery market just became more competitive as Fareway announced plans to build a new store in Council Bluffs.
Fareway is coming to McKenzie Plaza, the new shopping center under development on the northwest corner of Kanesville Boulevard and McKenzie Avenue.
Fareway has been referred to as a "25,000-square-foot village" grocery store that allows neighborhood merchants to surround the store and capitalize on the customer traffic. Unlike supermarkets that have expanded their offerings, Fareway has remained focused on the grocery business.

Other than my preference for a Whole Foods downtown, this seems like the perfect kind of store for downtown Omaha.
Construction activity at this site is already underway, so this action is almost too late, especially if there's any hang up over the funding sources:
In other action at the meeting, the council authorized Mayor Tom Hanafan to seek state funding for improvements that will be needed at the intersection of Kanesville Boulevard and McKenzie Avenue.
According to the Public Works Department, proposed development on the northwest corner of the intersection will warrant a traffic light, along with a warning flasher west of the intersection. A new Fareway grocery store is planned for that area.
The city is seeking $103,000 from the state's Traffic Safety Improvement Program to help with the cost. In conjunction with the traffic signal, the city has also partnered with Fareway officials to construct geometric improvements to provide for right in/right out access and a median on Kanesville.
Other funds for the improvements include $35,000 in general obligation bonds, $97,000 in private funds and $41,500 from the state Urban-State Traffic Engineering Program.
"With the Fareway traffic that will be added to the traffic that's already there, traffic signals will certainly be needed," said City Engineer/Public Works Director Greg Reeder.

Vertical construction started this past week, with prefab walls going up. Took a long time with some subgrade work, looked almost like giant underground bunkers being built underneath, but never got a close enough look to see what it was.

Check those prices! The grocery business in Council Bluffs just became more competitive after Fareway opened today on the norathwest corner of McKenzie Avenue and Kanesville Boulevard.
The doors opened at 10 a.m. on the 24,350-square-foot store that will anchor McKenzie Plaza. An additional 15,000 square feet of retail space is expected to become available.

Despite a higher price tag than anticipated, the Council Bluffs City Council Monday night approved a new traffic light at the intersection of Kanesville Boulevard and McKenzie Avenue near the new Fareway Grocery Store.
