I'm really excited about this! I really hope CB continues to push for development around this park it would be awesome to have concerts during the CWS and have an area that has shops/restaurants for people to walk over to during the CWS. Can't wait to see the future Omaha is really rockin' it hard lately.

That's too bad. Looks like it's only going to get worse.

Does anybody know why CB does not build a levy right next to the river?  Are they not able to?

Not sure if they can.

It looks like things should be ok.  Only going to rise another foot.

Don't mean to sound all weathermeteorological, or anything, but the last I saw, the Missouri River Basin is expected to get wide-spread, multiple inches of rain in the next 4 days, on top of what we already got.

If it only goes another foot, that would be a blessing.

It probably sits in a floodway and FEMA won't let them.

But wouldn't a levy change that?

I'm guessing it's a floodway by design.

From the story:
The newest piece of public art in Council Bluffs should be installed by this fall, if not earlier, an Iowa West Foundation official said.

Pete Tulipana, the foundation’s president and CEO, was referring to a 65-foot-tall sculpture by Mark di Suvero in River’s Edge Park, across the Missouri River from downtown Omaha.

The City Council Monday evening gave the go-ahead for the installation of the art piece by the internationally-known sculptor that will be located on the southwest corner of the park’s expansive Great Lawn.
Looks like they are doing prep work for this sculpture.

I like what they've done over there. I just think its a little funny that the open space features an unobstructed view of Downtown. Like "Ooh, there's Omaha, lets go there instead"

Thinking about the pedestrian bridge connection this morning made me wonder where the Iowa side condo development stands at this point. I believe the process was still in works getting the necessary OKs from the Corps Of Engineers but it seems like we haven't heard anything in a VERY long time. Ever since the signage for this development was removed from the levy I have kind of been having my doubts.

Anyone know what the status of the sculpture is either? Correct me if I am wrong, but I don't believe it has been completed yet.

It is my understanding that the city has been buying more property to add to the development. It is on the agenda for next week's city council meeting.

New life proposed for Playland Park
The Council Bluffs City Council Monday will vote on an Omaha company’s master plan to turn the now vacant green space in western Council Bluffs into a housing and workplace complex.

Key development sites include the office block, containing two multi-level office buildings and a parking structure at the southwest portion of the site, which is east of the river levee that separates the project from the Tom Hanafan River’s Edge Park.

A two- to four-level office building is proposed adjacent to the park providing views of the park, riverfront and downtown Omaha. The second structure includes a three- to six-level office building to the south.

A proposed parking structure nearby could also serve after business hours by providing parking for various public events at the riverfront or within the development.

The plan identifies a condominium tower block containing two towers at the northwest portion. The towers could be eight to 10 stories tall, according to the plan. In the middle portion between 41st and 42nd streets, plans call for three levels of apartments on top of a parking structure.

With council approval, the next step would be to create a development agreement between the developers and the city, Walsh said.

This would be great if they could move this along and bring it to fruition. It could be very similar to Aksarben Village with a little less retail but better views.

Would be a great addition to the Riverfront and the metro as a whole. I hope they are able to pull it off as described.

After a planning process that launched in 2007 and intensified last year, the 25-acre, city-owned site now is on track to become the “River’s Edge.” That’s a village of nearly 300,000 square feet of office and retail space, 1,606 parking stalls, entertainment spots, bike and walking paths and 353 residences ranging from condo towers to low-rise apartments.

Led by Omaha’s Noddle Cos. and a team of other developers, the project has secured Iowa West Foundation as an anchor tenant and carries an estimated price tag that has climbed to $100 million.
River’s Edge will have a 10-foot-wide, two-lane, bicycle track through its main east-west corridor, Avenue A. The bike path will not be in the street, but rather will run parallel to an even wider “pedestrian promenade” dotted with modern lighting, benches and pavers.

“It’s definitely more progressive, more advanced than anything we have in the metro area,” Noddle said.

Another new element — the piazza — is a specially designed, winding and curbless street that could be closed to traffic and transformed into a public plaza for art fairs, music and other activities.

Noddle has a good track record of follow through. Omaha should have teamed up with him and done something like this in north downtown.

I believe he is on the MECA board and has said that he won't develop anything downtown because of any conflict of interests issues that might arise.

Thus dooming North Downtown to be a sea of parking lots and missed opportunities.
