Bucky's Express - new stores

Post by icejammer »

While not exactly anything to crow about development-wise, this ought to be a major improvement over the eyesore that Rhoden allowed this to become after Superior moved to West O:

Bucky's Express makes plans for 35th and West Broadway
Another step in the economic facelift under way on West Broadway is taking form as plans have been filed with the city for a new Bucky's Express.

According to Steve Buchanan, president of Buchanan Oil, the new station at 35th and West Broadway will feature a dozen pumps, a 120-foot soft cloth carwash, 50 parking spaces and a 4,255-squre-foot convenience store with a walk-in cooler.
(edit to fix the link!)

Good. This is better than the loan place or whatever is there now.

A vacant lot is better than what was there.

I would agree, they recently tore down an older gas station on 60th and center and are going to begin building a new station. Buckys are popping up like starbucks all of a sudden

Well, the old Superior Honda is no more. It went down and it went down fast - they're hauling it away today. Shouldn't be too much longer before the new Bucky's goes up.

Too bad gas prices are falling so much, they won't be able to gouge the public and reap huge profits now.

Some places seemed to jump up late last week but there are plenty holding there own. Saw it at 1.99 still in CB at noon today. Was 2.08 at Flying J at exit 432 still this AM and 2.09 at the new station at the 370 exit along I80.

They had some BIG freekin gas tanks there the last few weeks. I really hope that this is the first of many "NEW" things to come along brodway between the Missouri River and the Railroad Viaduct.

Looks like construction, after stalling out for several months this spring, is (finally) nearing the end.  Here are a few pics from the Nonpareil this past weekend.

Bucky's opens at 35th and Broadway
Where the former Rhoden Auto Center stood at 3501 W. Broadway now stands a new Bucky's Express gas station.

The new location, which opened Aug. 10, is the 20th in the metro area. Bucky's offers 24 fueling stations with 12 pumps, including diesel. It also offers a "tunnel" car wash.

I just filled up there last Sunday.

I have a semi regular "breakfast club" thing at one of the casino buffets on Sunday, so I fill up on gas while I'm there.

Driving by there the other day, this has to be the biggest gas/convenience store in the world!  It takes up a whole block!
It makes QT look like one of those 2-pump, 1-bay stations of the 40s and 50s!  It is ready for entry into the Convenience Store
Hall of Fame!

That being said, it adds nothing to the American, Nebraska/Iowa, Omaha/CB culture......just another shrine to
the American unquenchable thirst for gas, 48-oz cups, lottery tix, tobacco, M and M's, unhealthy pre-prepared sandwiches....

Wake up, USA!

Still an improvement over Cash Advance or whatever was there most recently.
Where the former Rhoden Auto Center stood at 3501 W. Broadway now stands a new Bucky's Express gas station.
I believe the newspaper meant to say "Superior Honda" instead of "Rhoden Auto Center." While Superior was owned by the Rhoden company, the dealership that is referred to as "Rhoden Auto Center" has always existed, for as long as I can remember, on South Expressway. [/quote]

Actually, shortly after Superior moved to 144th St., Rhoden turned the building over to a used car lot (whoddathunkit, a used car lot on Broadway) under the Rhoden name.  So both you and the paper are correct....

Looks like the dump of a BP store by Mall of the Bluffs will be torn down and replaced with a brand spankin' new Bucky's Express in the near future.

BP to get extreme makeover
Bucky's is giving the BP station at 1759 Madison Ave. an extreme makeover.

The company acquired the property - its fourth in Council Bluffs and 30th in the metro area - almost a year ago because of its location next to Interstate 80, said Butch Gillman, director of operations. The station was closed Sept. 2 for demolition and reconstruction.

Plans are to build a 4,200-square-foot convenience store and car wash and install about 10 pumps at the station, he said. . . .

The station is expected to reopen in mid-December - still as a BP outlet, Gillman said.

Bucky's also plans to redo a station it owns on South 24th Street, but the company doesn't have a timetable for that project yet.

Butch Gillman is the director of operations? Hopefully he is not the infamous Butch of Butch's BP in Ames. If your car gets towed in that town, which happens often because people are anal about their parking spots there (my friends car was towed twice in a year) its usually Butch who took it because his name appears first in the phone book. To get it out again costs approximiately $100. This is perhaps the most hated business in Ames.

yeah, not to get off track, but when my wife and i first started dating, she came over to my apartment and was parked in a non-visitor spot, apparently, and the tow company (heartland) said he'd give us enough time to get $200 or they were taking it.  Thing is, she was barely hooked up and wasn't even on the flatbed (and we ran down as soon as we heard them and saw what they were doing--at that place, there were dozens of tows in a matter of months).  Some tow truck drivers are |expletive| dicks, i don't care if it's their job or not.  They act like |expletive| repo men and it upsets me off how they think they need to be sneaky, or be an [expletive] when you see what they're doing.

end rant.

Anyway the other day i noticed they knocked it down and i was actually shocked.  That old BP was there for a long time, you sort of get used to seeing it.  But i am glad someone is putting a new station there.

I am quite certain that Butch Gillman has no connection with the BP in Ames, he's lived in the area for a very long time.

Neglected to mention - the new Bucky's opened by the Mall of the Bluffs on Jan. 30th.  At least they'll have a good month and a half of business before 15% of the mall stores close in March.....

New Bucky's on Madison Avenue boasts more features
In the former Bucky's Express store at 1759 Madison Ave., there were just five cooler doors people could open for their cold treats.

Recently, a company official was counting the number of doors now needed to handle the expansive selection of beverages and food in the newly renovated facility there.

"Let's see, one, two, three ... 10 ... 20 ... 35 cooler doors," said Butch Gillman, director of operations. . . .
