Suite deal: More dorms planned at IWCC
Imagine having to turn away prospective students who need on-site housing because you don't have enough units.

This is the dilemma that President Dan Kinney has faced at Iowa Western Community College.

Though the college is currently constructing a 72-bed suite building attached to the original Reiver Suites building, Kinney said they should be building a unit with twice as many suites.
The college is also planning for more housing units in coming years. Atop the hill behind Reiver Suites, site preparation for the next dorm building is taking place. Kinney expects the ground to be leveled by next fall, but construction on a new building won't take place for at least five years.
"Destiny is not a matter of chance, it is a matter of choice; it is not a thing to be waited for, it is a thing to be achieved."

Iowa Western bond issue passes
Voters approved a $22 million bond issue Tuesday for Iowa Western Community College.

Unofficial results show the referendum winning with an 85.1 percent approval overall. Official results should be ready by Monday, but election officials said it was likely the results would be affected, at most, by only a percentage point or two.

The college asked for the bond issue to fund an ambitious upgrade and expansion of the school's nursing and health care programs at its campuses in Council Bluffs, Clarinda and Harlan.

IWCC plans new student center
A two-story student center will rise at Iowa Western Community College in the next few years and should be ready for occupancy during the 2010 academic year.
Meeting on the college's Shenandoah campus Monday afternoon, the board of trustees voted unanimously to move forward as quickly as possible in obtaining bids for construction of the 71,000-square-foot student center.

The board also voted unanimously to move forward as soon as bids can be obtained and approved with construction of 72 additional units in the Reiver Suites student housing complex that would hopefully be ready for occupancy in the fall of 2009. The new dormitory rooms would complete an existing Reiver Suites complex that was designed for future expansion. With utilities already in place, construction is expected to move forward quickly.
Plans call for the new student center to house the culinary arts department, a cafeteria, bookstore and the campus library and will be the first step in plans to expand the facilities that focus on health care careers. The new student center, which will face southwest toward the Reiver Suites, will be built adjacent to Lewis Hall, the campus building that houses child care, engineering technology, deaf interpretation and computer-aided design, among other specialties.

"This is the first domino, if you will, that has to happen for the expansion of the school's nursing and health care programs," IWCC President Dan Kinney said.

Voters in December approved a $22 million bond issue that would pay for renovations, new classrooms, lecture halls, examination rooms and labs. The college would add space for a new library and bookstore, and would also build simulator laboratories that will enable students to complete clinical experiences. Long-range plans also call for additions to the Art Center to provide more space for the music and arts programs.

Iowa Western Community College Wellness Center named

Image
Iowa Western Community College officials announced Wednesday that the college’s wellness center, now under construction on the southern edge of the campus near the college dormitories, will be named the Dr. John W. and Jean Marshall Wellness Center.

The Marshalls donated $2 million for construction of the $15.2 million, 92,000-square-foot building that is expected to be completed in about one year.

Don Kohler, IWCC’s vice president for marketing and public relations, said the wellness center will offer the college’s staff and students a variety of activities, including:

• Cardio and strength training with treadmills, ellipticals, bikes, stair climbers, rowers, functional trainers and cable-assisted weights.

• The mezzanine level will offer cardio training with ellipticals, treadmills and bikes as well as functional training utilizing resistance bands, medicine balls and mats.

• The field turf area will offer a variety of intramurals including flag football, softball, soccer, Frisbee and others. There will also be space for non-organized play. The hard court area will offer a variety of intramurals including volleyball, badminton, pickle ball, basketball as well as space for non-organized play and pick-up games.

• The aerobic space will be the site of large-group classes for employees and students as well as fitness video check-outs.

I’ve been wondering what the massive building was when driving by, I assumed it was just an indoor field house for the football team. Looks great.

I was wondering the same thing, and had those same thoughts. It sounds like it is going to be open to all students not just athletes.

Black Hills Energy plans to break ground this fall for construction of a new $11 million training and operations facility on up to 13 acres currently owned by Iowa Western Community College between its Council Bluffs campus and Interstate 80, the two parties announced this morning. BHE hopes to open the facility in spring 2020.

The building will house all of BHE's Council Bluffs operations, as well as a regional training center, and could eventually hold up to 150 employees, some of which would be moved to Council Bluffs from Nebraska and other locations, according to Steve Stone, area operations manager. The company currently has about 40 employees in the city.

"It's a good regional location for us as a company," Stone said.

With easy access to two interstates and an airport, it's good logistically, too, he added.

More than 300 field and office employees from Iowa, Arkansas, Kansas and Nebraska will attend training sessions at the center throughout the year, Stone said.

The land has finally sold to another developer. There is a story in todays paper but I can't see it. I have so vague knowledge as to what's going in.
