Council approves bridge renovation, Artspace projects
The Council Bluffs City Council Monday evening approved the plans and costs for the renovation of the pedestrian bridge over Kanesville Boulevard near North Broadway.

Besides necessary repair work, the Iowa West Foundation will invest $150,000 for beautification accents.

Repair work for the bridge, built in 1972, will involve removal and replacement of the entire flat portion of the floor, sandblasting, painting of structural parts and installation of a drain system to prevent moisture collection and severe rusting.

The new aesthetics would include a pair of 95-foot-long steel arch beams to span over the roadway from the east bridge pier to the west bridge pier, creating a symbolic portal. "Council Bluffs signs will be replaced on the center of each side of the bridge, enhancing the bridge's landmark status. The existing cage fencing located over the walkway will be removed and replaced with black vertical wire fence panels.

The bridge's nighttime appearance will be enhanced with color linear lighting on the arches, horizontal lighting of the signs and lighting of the roadway beneath the bridge.

The city has budgeted $100,000 in general obligation bonds for the infrastructure repairs, and all the work is planned for next summer's school break. . .

Council OKs bridge work
Many school children depend on it for safety and convenience when crossing busy Kanesville Boulevard at North Broadway.

It's the Kanesville pedestrian bridge, and the Council Bluffs City Council Monday evening voted to go ahead with needed repairs. . . .

The project approved by the council will construct a new concrete deck and make repairs to the corroded area. The council approved the bid of $282,079 by Andersen Construction Co. of Council Bluffs. It was the lowest of six bids submitted.

Work will begin the first week of June after school is let out for the summer, said Public Works Director Greg Reeder, and hopefully be completed when school resumes in the fall. . . .

The money for the repair work is coming out of general obligation bond revenues. The Iowa West Foundation will fund beautification work in the amount of $150,000. This will involve double railing on approach spans, while the existing cage fencing located over the roadway will be removed and replaced with black vertical wire fence panels. All portions of the bridge are recommended to be painted.
