Ponca Tribe Looks to Carter Lake

Post by icejammer »

I'm surprised no one posted this, since it was in the OWH yesterday...

Ponca Tribe considering C.L. casino
The Ponca Tribe is considering building a slot casino in Carter Lake.

The National Indian Gaming Commission ruled on Dec. 31 that the Gaming Regulatory Act would allow for gambling on 4.5 acres of land in Carter Lake. The commission previously said the land was not in trust for gambling, but it has now changed its decision.

Council Bluffs City Attorney Dick Wade said the land was originally placed in trust for a health care facility for Native Americans. He said the commission determined the land could be deemed eligible for gambling.

Wade said the Iowa Attorney General's office, which had less than a week to respond to the Ponca request before the request was acted on by the commission, is evaluating its options for a federal appeal of the decision. . .
Obviously, with only 4.5 acres of land, they aren't going to build anything to rival any of the CB casinos (consider each has minimum 60 acres of land), this will likely seal the deal for Nebraska to approve casino gambling, if this decision holds up to appeal.
