BMX Track

Local businessman pushing for BMX track in Bluffs
. . . Sneller would like to see a BMX track built in the city and has brought in some of the most respected names in the bicycle industry to pursue his goal.

While there is no location for the track, Sneller has been diligently working to gain support for the project. . . .

Through local skateboard shop owner Guy Tomcykowski, Sneller was able to get in contact with Everett Rosecrans. Rosecrans is a former member of the National Bicycle League board of trustees and has worked with many legends in the bicycling and skateboarding industry since the 1970s. . . .

One of the people Rosecrans was able to put Sneller in contact with was National Bicycle League director of competition Bob Tedesco. Tedesco has served with the league for more than 30 years and was instrumental in getting BMX racing accepted by the International Olympic Committee as an Olympic sport in 2008.

Tedesco was recently in Council Bluffs to share his support for the project.

“I think it is safe to say he loved the city,” Sneller said.

Sneller said his goal is to have the track operational in April, and while that seems like a quick turnaround for not having the land yet, Sneller and Rosencrans said it was doable.

“We need about 2½ acres of land and two weeks to build the course,” Rosencrans said. . . .

Sneller said Council Bluffs is developing into a bicycle community, with the world-rated Wabash Trace Trail and the Lewis & Clark Down Hill Trail rated as the best within a 400-mile radius.

“The NBL will have Olympic qualifying in 2012 in the Midwest,” Sneller added. “Ideally, Iowa would be a place to put that.”
