Okay, so I made a last minute trip over to Denver via the Zephyr (delayed as always). I had actually kind of forgotten about the marijuana situation, until I stepped in to one of the RTD lines on my way to Littleton. I was astonished how many people smelled of |expletive|. When I got back to the Amtrak station (located in a temporary building away from Union Station, as massive renovations go on), there were many folks smelling of it as well. So, it was probably no surprise, when we arrived back in Omaha, there were two plain clothed DEA agents profiling people (one sporting head mounted camera). They pulled one guy aside, asked if he'd consent to scrutiny by their dog... brought the thing in from their truck outside. Everyone watched on with interest... dog didn't find anything.

Monday's Amtrak from Denver to Omaha was over 12 hours late. Sunday's was way late too and actually ran over the Union Pacific instead of the BNSF.

On the way out yesterday, it was pretty horrible... started 1hr 40m late from Chicago... some how lost more time through Iowa (granted, this was as the snow 'storm' was passing through). We lost another hour or so as I slept through Nebraska... but the worst was outside of Brush, CO... where a crew apparently having spent it's work hours, abandoned it's train on the main line. We sat for nearly 3 hrs waiting for a new crew to arrive, get it out of the way. I arrived in Denver at 1:30pm.

I didn't mind coming back, because I at least made it to work relatively on time ... it rolled in a bit after 8am (1hr 30m late arriving in Denver). Although I didn't appreciate their pressure to kick our |expletive| out of the Amtrak shack, into the cold as we waited for our rides, because they wanted to go home themselves.

Good to know. Hate pot smoke. Reminds me of high school. When the two reasons to take PE was 1. To play team handball, and 2. To have 1 point in the day when you could use the head without standing in a cloud of pot smoke.

On a second thought, did you exit that particular train feeling like you had every single viral and bacterial infection known to man? We rode the Zephyr to Chicago last month, and while I enjoyed the freedom relative to the airlines, I felt disgusting.

Two neighboring states are asking the U.S. Supreme Court to strike down Colorado's laws legalizing recreational marijuana.

The Colorado attorney general's office says the states of Nebraska and Oklahoma have filed the lawsuit directly with the nation's highest court. The attorney general's office says the lawsuit alleges "that Colorado's Amendment 64 and its implementing legislation regarding recreational marijuana is unconstitutional under the Supremacy Clause of the U.S. Constitution."

Big E and I were talking about this yesterday and he brought up a great point that I didn't even think about. Bruning is always talking about "States Rights" but when he doesn't like a law in his neighboring state, what does he do? Run to the feds...

Nebraska Complains About Colorado Weed While Enabling South Dakota Alcoholism

Meanwhile, have you ever heard of the tiny town of Whiteclay, Nebraska, population 10? It holds the distinction of being the US town with the greatest beer sales per capita of any American town. This town of 10 has four licensed off-sale beer stores that sold 3.6 million cans of beer in 2013, or almost 10,000 cans of beer per day.

How is that possible? Well, Whiteclay, you see, lies on the northern Nebraska border with South Dakota, where it directly abuts the Oglala Sioux (Lakota) Indian Nation on the Pine Ridge Reservation. And Pine Ridge has maintained absolute alcohol prohibition -- sale and possession -- since its creation in 1889 (except for a brief time in the 1970s). Illegal whiskey peddlers had already been pushing alcohol to the Lakota for years and alcoholism was devastating the nation. President Arthur in 1882 designated a 50-square-mile extension south of Pine Ridge into Nebraska and in 1889, Congress included that dry buffer zone, which encompassed Whiteclay, as part of the reservation.
