DSM Replacing Iconic Bridges
Des Moines is going to be replacing their awesome arched bridges downtown in the coming years and it looks like they will be replacing it with a rather plain design.
To this:
Such a shame to lose that awesome history. The bridges must have run their structural timeline I guess.

Wow that is sad.
Re: DSM Replacing Iconic Bridges
They went from Roman-esque to 'interstate crossing the Platte'. Oh well. What can ya do.

The top photo is of the historic Court Avenue Bridge. It is not being replaced.

Re: DSM Replacing Iconic Bridges
Actually that's Grand Ave bridge, which is the one being replaced. Notice Brenton Skating Plaza in the background. Unfortunately it was going to cost over $30 million to replace it with a bridge that has true arch supports, and I think they're aiming for around $10 million.

I deleted the picture of the Court Ave Bridge that I wrongly included in my OP.300hskr wrote:Actually that's Grand Ave bridge, which is the one being replaced. Re: DSM Replacing Iconic Bridges
Its sad that cities keep on tearing down historic structures, going for the "modern" vibe. Des Moines attempts at this are sad, they need to learn from Omaha on how to revitalize a downtown.

I really don't like the way you are taking to potatoe. He has every right to express his opinion here as anyone else. If you disagree with potatoe you should negate his views based on their merit, not by resorting to ridicule.Linkin5 wrote:You are either a troll or have no clue what you are talking about.PotatoeEatsFish wrote:Its sad that cities keep on tearing down historic structures, going for the "modern" vibe. This all boils down to taste and temperance. And commonly a caveat for public safety negated.

Apologies let me clarify if you have zero knowledge of Omaha's history. Using Omaha as a savior of historical architecture makes no sense as we have torn down an immense amount of our past (Jobber's canyon was one of the biggest destruction of historical buildings ever in the United States).daveoma wrote:I really don't like the way you are taking to potatoe. Anyway, as for Potatoe, don't be too hard on him. I get the impression that he's rather young (no offense Potatoe) so cut him some slack.

He said "They are some big, ugly red brick buildings"
...and then they were gone.

Re: DSM Replacing Iconic Bridges
I don't fault ignorance until you are using false information to discount a great urban core like Des Moines. As a city nerd I take offense to that :-).Garrett wrote:https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jobbers_C ... c_DistrictMTO wrote:Thats a little to hard to believe.Linkin5 wrote:(Jobber's canyon was one of the biggest destruction of historical buildings ever in the United States).
