Kum & Go HQ DT DSM

Post by iamjacobm »

K&G is moving their HQ to downtown into a 160K SF $92 million building. I really like a lot of DSM's low rise architecture, lots of glass and dynamic lines.

How can their stores be so terrible and yet they come up with that cool building?

Yeah that it a lot for a 4-5 story building. I think the building will fit in very well with the surrounding area and sculpture park across the street. I wonder what will become of their West Des Moines building once they move.

As unique as that building looks, I am still glad that we are getting an 18-20 story tower instead of something like this.

Actually, it sounds like the building is now going to cost over $100 million as they changed the design from 120,000 sq ft to 160,000 sq ft.

Gavilon is probably more comparable. Looks like K&G has 300 employees in their HQ. They are just spending more than twice as much for a similarly sized structure. I don't know DSM's corporate climate that well, but companies the size of HDR are rare.

The people in DesMoines have been quite a bit more progressive in their architectural design expectations than Omahans...maybe because they are closer to MPLS and Chicago and are a bit less conservative in general.

Honestly, I don't see this as a smart investment. Paying double for a similar structure, but it looks cool? I am sure you could find something in between. This just seems ridiculous. However, at the end of the day it will look neat. Hope it's worth 40+ million more.

The CEO is going to own it and lease it to the company. Kind of an interesting dynamic. It sounds like he wanted to make a statement in the city.

I applaud his effort to contribute something more to his city than simply securing an eventual "return on his investment." While it may not be my favorite design, it's definitely not ordinary or boring.

The best architecture has value beyond the money spent to build it.

Read this article today...which some here will appreciate....

We can only hope HDR's prowess can come close to this.
