Sioux Falls population by year

Wow, Sioux Falls is red hot for population growth. They have grown almost 20% in the past 10 years.

any idea how much is true growth and how much is annexation.

Based on these figures, it appears that the metro area has grown a fast pace too. Both the city and metro population have more than doubled since 1980. I am not sure they have the same generous annexation laws that Omaha does (most cities in the US don't).

Sioux Falls has annexed land but mostly farmland as none of the small towns around it have been gobbled up.

So is this organic growth or are they seeing the rural-urban migration like we are?

I wish this thread would have been title Sioux Falls Population Explosion.

He wanted to know if, like Omaha, the migration to Sioux Falls is due to the rural to urban migration. I was puzzled by that assumption given our large in migration of minorities. Sorry I wasn't clear enough in my original statement.

I am sure there is some rural to urban but people coming from out of state also.

That is fantastic growth. They're doing things right up in Sioux Falls. A diversified economy which bodes well for the future..

Sioux Falls is a great city, they are basically the antithesis of Sioux City.

It is amazing how much that town has grown, and is growing. I've went up there before and visited it. It really has a cute, nice downtown, and some great historic structures & homes. I saw the falls, too. I also went to Empire Mall. I also checked out the new house styles in suburbia. Their houses have a nice look, but a plainer look than ours, ones which resemble styles like you see in Minnesota and even really far-north places like suburban Anchorage. Between the firs & evergreens, the rocky river & falls, and the house styles, you can feel more a tinge of the "Far North" up there, I feel -- just several hours north of Omaha. Kinda funny... (Sometimes, I wish Omaha had a little more of that feel.)

If you like historic structures, Sioux City is also a neat little stop.

Because it is the largest city in North Dakota, my impulse is to think of it as bigger than our 2nd largest city, Lincoln. But, Lincoln is still considerably bigger.
