Brew of the Week: WoodGrain

Let the bartender pour you a cold pint of the brewery's Milk Stout. This beer has grown from its origins as co-owner Steve Hartman's humble home brew to one of WoodGrain's most popular taps. Unlike other dark beers, this choice won't weigh you down.

Another great favorite is Cascade S.M.A.S.H. (single malt and single hop) Pale Ale, which pairs perfectly with Pappy's pepperoni pizza, in the same building. This simple but mouthwatering creation was the brewery's first test batch. The owners were surprised to hit a home run their first time at-bat.

WoodGrain expands craft beer production

http://www.argusleader.com/story/news/b ... 457430001/

A local (Sioux Falls) microbrewery is expanding enough that it should be able to share its beer with customers in other South Dakota locations.

WoodGrain Brewing Co., 101 S. Phillips Ave., #100, moved in two new fermentation tanks Thursday that will grow the production capacity from 400 barrels a year to 800 barrels, said Steve Hartman, co-owner and brewer. A barrel is 31 gallons.

I've been to Woodgrain. IMO, they have no room for additional expansion after these tanks are installed. Seems like their business plan just did a 180. I don't know what to think of this news.

It's been ages since I've been up that way (in fact, last time was when I was on my way to Minot). I always enjoyed the city, gotta make it back up there for shits and giggles, could be a nice little drive.

Brewers raise a glass as craft beer bill heads to governor's desk

https://www.argusleader.com/story/news/ ... 399886002/

The bill incorporates two proposals, one brought by the governor's office and the other from beer wholesalers.

The bill would set a 1,500 barrel cap on the amount South Dakota microbrewers can sell directly to restaurants or stores without a wholesaler. Under current law, microbrewers must work with a wholesaler to sell to stores and restaurants.

Craft brewers would also be able to make up to 30,000 barrels a year while also keeping licenses that let them sell wine and cider or keep offsite taprooms open. The current limit is 5,000 barrels a year.

Good for them. They had some reps at Stoneybrook the other day, but I didn't get a chance to talk to thus, now I wish I did.
