Official: Ultimate CHICAGO boom rundown

Post by adam186 »

It is the ultimate, enjoy.

Click on the individual building names to be taken to the corresponding Emporis building page to learn more and see pics/renderings. You can also click on the word “website” at the end of each building entry line in the list to be taken to the official project website to learn even more and for developer/marketing contact information.

The buildings are ranked according to the structural height per the guidelines of Emporis. Where no roof height is listed, it is either unknown or the structural height and the roof height are one and the same.

Notes:

* - The information for the proposed towers may not be entirely accurate, but it's the best that we have to go on for now. Also keep in mind that there are many more “loosely proposed” towers in the Lake Shore East, Central Station, and River East mega projects that are not included here. This list only contains proposed towers that have been given individual names and designs as opposed to theoretical future towers that exist only as generic ideas within the context of master plans.

** - The Beitler Telecom Tower is not a traditional skyscraper with multiple stacked floors running the full height of the tower, but if built, it would be a very significant addition to the skyline, and thus merits inclusion in this list.

*** - The height for Mandarin Oriental International is likely much taller than the 887’ figure listed. The property it is slated for was once home to an 80 story SCB-designed skyscraper proposal known as Boulevard East Tower, and that is probably where this 887’ figure is coming from. With the Mandarin proposal standing at 90 floors (and likely redesigned from the Boulevard East Tower proposal), it will probably be in the 1,000’ range, if built.

**** - Blue Cross-Blue Shield is an existing office tower that currently stands 411 ft./32 floors tall. The tower was designed to accommodate a significant vertical addition. Current plans call for a 28 story addition which would take the tower to a total of 60 floors and well over the 700 ft. threshold.

***** – Union Station is an early 20th century, 8 story train station. The structure was designed to accommodate a significant vertical addition. Current plans call for an 18 story addition which would take the building to a total of 26 floors.

All of the credit for this thread goes to the hard-working and extremely dedicated Chicago editors and photographers of Emporis. It is they who track down developers and architects to get height data and renderings. It is they who schlep around town taking pictures and keeping track of the status of all the various projects in Chicago. I merely arrange the information they gather into this simple, concise, and easy to read list.

Yeah for Chicago. But do they ahve this?

:P A cool thing to consider is that Omaha and Chicago's 3rd tallest buildings will both be residential.

I have to comment on the Trump building though. That location has one of the most impressive clusters of old buildings I've ever seen. This really doesn't fit the area.

heck Trump has enough pocket change (so do some locals) to throw up a supertall here… now its just up to DTO to persuade them to.

Ya, it's really to early tell right now though. SOM actually designed the buiding to recess at 3 very important heights. First setback is below the Wrigley building, 2nd setback for Marnia City, 3rd setback at IBM level. I would suggest you to look at STRs 3-D Chicago model.

One question though, I thought the Beitler tower was dead and the Fordham was going fulfill its purpose. Although I hope both eventually go up of course.

Good question, there was talk of taking it off the list. However, there has been renewed interest in the site. I don't think it will be built though. Fordham Spire is planning on integrating HD antennaes into the spire. If that happens Beitler TV tower will not happen. I hope Fordham Spire gets built more so than Beitler.

That Staybridge Suites is kind of a rip-off of the new MIT dorms.

On Feb 22, Chicago started construction on two 500+ towers in the same day. Waterview Tower at 1,047 feet and The Clare at 595 feet. With the start of construction on the Waterview Tower, Chicago now has 2 1,000+ footer underconstruction. First time since Sears and AON were underconstruction in the 70's.

Also, a preliminary model (not yet released to the public) of the much antipated AQUA building which is part of the $4 billion Lakeshore East development. Aqua will be 835 ft (obligated to change)
Image

I will update the rundown to reflect these changes. FYI- Chicago will have 95 500+ footers with many more in the line up.

What building would you like mostly to be built in Omaha? Not necessarily the tallest, but a good design that would fit into Omaha skyline perfectly.

Also, I'm going to update the rundown so the pics have the height on them as well. Please POST anything.

I know it’s kind of tall but that waterview would compliment the FNC very nicely.

I was thinking 300 North LaSalle would compliment the FNB tower better, but I would a 1,047' 4" tower any day.

Ya, but I think something like that is in the works already? I really like One Museum Park. It could stand by the new DT ballpark or by Gene Leahy Mall and create a street all. I don't know, that would be really cool.

I have no idea what kind of style those glassy buildings are except maybe "Modern". Does someone with architectural experience or knowledge of this sort of thing know? I've been kind of wanting to know as well.

Revisions

Post by adam186 »

I'm working on a major update. It should take several hours and a lot of work. I plan on rolling it out sometime this weekend.

Revisions include:
1. Moving all pictures to my hosting site
2. Adding new renderings for a few major projects and others
3. Adding more projects
4. Adding height info above pictures
5. Other minor revisions I can't think of right now

Nope, there are 6. You may be overlooking the Spertus Institute on the far left. It's tiny and blue.

Hey Adam can you post a pic of the chi-town skyline (preferably the future one with the biggies) and put a line at the height of the FNC please?

10 Oh-So-Chicago Experiences

In this living, vibrant, diverse city, you'll be faced with a serious dilemma: One human being can't possibly see and do everything. (Particularly on summer weekends, when festivals, the beach, and Lincoln Park all beckon at once, I'd love to be able to clone myself!) To get you started, this is a list of what I consider the quintessential Chicago experiences.

I think your shortchanging the FNC tower a bit there Adam. The Aon Center (tall white tower to the left) is just over 1000ft and you have FNC about half as tall, which makes it look about 500ft, not the 643 or whatever it is. Better start checking your added buildings. But yeah, still humbling. :D

I can't see the pictures from work, but if the Board of Trade is in the picture (old building in the southern end of the skyline by the Sears Tower) it is the closest to FNC's 633'.

Wags, you may be right. However, I was basing the height according to someone elses work. The 672 foot building on the left that is super imposed, underconstruction, may not be accurate but I think it's pretty close. As far as the Aon goes, I wouldn't consider 1,136 ft just over 1,000 (I guess it depends on how you look at it). Thanks for comenting, sometimes I feel my work is unappreciated when no one posts. I can be soft like Jeff from time to time  .
