New Minneapolis Stadiums

Post by Scuzz »

Not sure if you all caught this, but Minneapolis is building two new sports stadiums... one for the Twins, and one for the Gopher football team. Both stadiums are long overdue... The Twins have been playing baseball in a stadium where most of the seats don't even face home plate. Anyone that has been to a Gophers football game will understand that the MetroDump isn't condusive to a college football atmosphere.

In case anyone is interested:

That's news to me. Very cool, I remember going to the Twins stadium as a child. What's going to replace it(the site)?

Actually, since the cost of new buildings is growing higher and higher, the Vikings may be stuck with a refurbished Metrodome... It'll be interesting to see how the state of Minnesota reacts to the stadium push from the Vikes. The Twins started pushing eleven years ago... Gopher's coach Glen Mason started talk about a staium in 1999. Neither of those teams had a "love boat" or similar incident in MSP recently; however, we should all remember that being a winning team will keep you in the public forefront more than anything else).

In my mind -- 90 percent chance the Vikes have a new stadium in Anoka... Ten percent cahne for Minneapolis proper. We'll see what sort of taxes they try to throw around next year.

I'm guessing the Twins stadium really rejuvenates downtown Minneapolis. This will be great to see... I think that the way this stadium somwhat's faces downtown will play into the new nostalgia. It'll be great for Twins fans... Not to mention they won't have to root for their displaced Twins as the "Vegas Gamblers." Let's not forget Vegas (or somewhere simliar would've gotten this franchise had this not been approved this year).

Seems like they've been talking about these for YEARS. Glad to see these projects are apparently moving forward.

Was there any place in the league worse for baseball than the Metrodome?

KC?
Tampa Bay?
Florida?

Thats about it with crappy stadiums anymore. And, KC's problem will pry be solved in a few years anyway. So crappy stadiums in the MLB are basically gone. Thank goodness for the end of the cookie cutter!

Getting a stadium back on campus for the Gophers is going to be HUGE. Now they can get some fans to actually show up for the games and get back on track to add to their 6 national championships. The Metrodome never really had the allure for the college fans, with hardly any tailgating going on.

The Twins stadium is going to be pretty cool, even though they will give up the extreme home-field advantage that the "HomerDome" gave them during their runs to the World Series titles in '87 and '91.

The Vikings are probably the most beloved of the Minnesota teams, and their day in the sun will come as long as they can find some dollars to build the stadium up in Blaine.

Check out the Twins ballpark

A thick stand of pine trees beyond the centerfield wall, evoking the forests of northern Minnesota, and the looming presence of the downtown Minneapolis skyline, appeared to be the signature elements of the final design for the Minnesota Twins ballpark when drawings were unveiled this morning.

Looks great except the face that on opening day it was 19 degrees and snowing in MN.  Will be cool in the summer!  I might have to get back up there.

I think these preliminary plans look pretty good.  Here are a few more links:

That's cool. Being a Vikings fan I can dig it. It reminds me of Qwest Field in Seattle with a bit of the Ford Center in Detroit.

I now live just a few blocks away from the site of the new Twins Stadium.  Site clearing is underway, and ground breaking is due to start August 2.  Would occasional photo updates be something this forum is interested in?  I know it's not Omaha, but it should be interesting.  If no one cares, I won't bother.  Just let me know.

Updates:

Official ground breaking of the new Twins park tonight.

Vikings ownership decides not to purchase land around the Dome.  This land was seen as key to implementing their plan for a new stadium.  This has caused rampant speculation around here that they may look to move (probably L.A.).  The collapse of the bridge has changed public perception of where money should go, further hurting their chances of funding for a new stadium.

I hope to get over there this weekend and take some pictures myself.  If I can, I'll post them.

Wilf still looking to develop Dome area

The Vikings owner's staff members have contacted owners of stadium-area land since the Star Tribune deal was canceled.
A Vikings vice president said Thursday that Wilf still plans to invest "hundreds of millions of dollars" toward a proposed $954 million Vikings stadium and revitalizing the Downtown East neighborhood, but one property owner said Wilf never intended to buy all the lots in the area.

The bridge collapse certainly didn't help.  It will look bad when he goes to the legislature looking for money.  Everyone will make the absurd conclusion that state funding towards the stadium would detract from transportation.  Even though one can and should come from hotel taxes, sales taxes, etc, etc, and the other should come from gas taxes.  Columnists is the putrid Start Tribune immediately jumped on the Twins when the bridge collapse, basically implying funding for their new stadium caused the collapse.

My morning commute takes me right next to the new stadium on the on ramp to 394, which goes next to, and right under all the construction.  They started pouring concrete today, and the trucks had huge Twins logos on the side.  It was kinda cool.  I'll throw a camera in tomorrow and see if I can get a picture of them -- which could be hard, on an on ramp, but this morning we were moving about 3 mph, so maybe not ;)

Target Field (what a surprise)... being the name of the Twins new ballpark.

TCF Bank Stadium is the name of the new University of Minnesota stadium (where my son will be playing, the trumpet, it purportedly will have the nation's 'finest marching band facility' covering 20,000 sq feet :D ).

I'll be going up this weekend to watch my son play and the Gophers attempt to advance to 4-0 (they only had 1 win last season!) against Florida Atlantic... in the Metrodome.

One very cool (okay, getting downright freezing with each passing day!) college town... marching across campus to the new stadium will be even cooler (my tie in :P ).

Yeah, my son is in there somewhere.

Cool time lapse from opening night at 'the Bank' where the Gophers made their first deposit with a win over Air Force.  They've got a REAL test this weekend with a top 10 ranked Cal coming to town.

Cool vid Jeff. Too bad Iowa isn't going up there this year to ruin the party. :) Here's some interesting reading from the ever factual Wiki about the origins of the Floyd of Rosedale statue they play for.

Just another stadium for the Hawks to take over ;)  I managed to get one of the last 'taking over the dome 1 last time' shirts last year.  Minneapolis is fun to visit for football.

Here is a link to a virtual fly-through of the new Vikings stadium and also another link to additional exterior and interior renderings. What's most exciting is the $400 million downtown east development in front of the stadium which has also broke ground. This project includes a 4 acre urban park, two 18 story towers consolidating 5000 Wells Fargo employees in the Twin Cities, a 6 level parking ramp and a 27 story mixed use tower on top of the parking ramp containing 200 apartments and a 150 room Radisson Red hotel. This will connect the new stadium to the rest of downtown and also link it to the skyway system. I've also attached a link to the downtown east site plan that developer Ryan Companies has posted on its website.

Enjoy!
