In its inaugural NBA Development League season, the Sioux Falls Skyforce has been awarded the opportunity to host the third annual NBA Development League Martin Luther King, Jr. Showcase.

The event will be held at the Arena on Jan. 15-17.

Conceived prior to the 2004-05 season, the Showcase provides exposure for D-League players and coaches to NBA general managers, player personnel executives and scouts on three consecutive days at one location.

Although let's face it... Omaha wouldn't support such a team, any more than it would the Knights.

Sioux Falls has supported the SkyForce strongly through the years (starting 1989) even when Isiah Thomas more or less took the CBA into the toilet. The upcoming season is their first in the NBDL. They have had a strong local owner(s) for the past 13 years.

Basketball is its business, so while the NBA D-League is selling dreams, it's also offering insurance.

When it was founded six years ago, the league formed a player development program designed to assist players on and off the court. It's since been incorporated into the Martin Luther King Jr. Showcase, an exposure-fest that's being held this week in Sioux Falls.

Each of the 12 assembled teams will play two games and attend one educational session featuring retired player turned motivational speaker Walter Bond and a panel of NBA scouts.

The championship is the Skyforce’s first as a member of the D-League, and third overall after winning titles in the now-defunct CBA in 1996 and 2005.
