New York City after 9/11

Post by thenewguy »

First off, to the admins: you can join this to something else if there's a similar section (i didn't see one when i searched)

Anyway, in light of today, i wanted to see some of the renderings of how the skyline was supposed to look, and i found one.  I didn't know if i should put it here or somewhere else, but check this out...

Says they want to have it done by 2011, but i don't see that happening.  Anyway, though it sucks the twin towers aren't around, i think that the new skyline is nice

all the events surrounding 9/11 are fascinating, although horribly tragic.  I get so wrapped up in them, and get really depressed and saddened by seeing all the coverage and shows pertaining to the attacks.  But for some reason, it's hard to turn away...  i still remember what i was doing that morning.  I was going to a history class in college, and everyone was in the student center (and anywhere there was a tv) watching.  They ended up not holding classes that day, and i didn't work so that's all we had to do.  Also, burger king had the $1 double cheeseburgers, so we picked them up(and got a case of beer) from a buddy, and watched coverage all day.  Finally it got to be too much and we had to turn away.  That day was rough.

If you ever get the chance to go see the WTC before they rebuild it I would highly recommend going. It's shocking to see in person. The whole is huge. You start to relive things in your head and wonder what it must have been like to be there in person that day. I wondered what it must have been like to be a tourist there and how to have handled the panic. Would I have known where to run? Where to escape too? Would another attack have happened while running? So many things go through your mind about that day.

Steel for the Freedom Tower is just starting to rise now.  I'm not sure what the status is of the surrounding buildings.

I think they stopped all construction a few weeks ago because they are so over budget already.

As somebody that has been in the original towers, visited the site 2 months after 9/11/2001, and have been back to the site about every year since then it is so sad that this site still sits empty.  Seven years after this tragedy and little more than foundation work has been completed in the twin tower's site.  I am extremely skeptical of a  completion date of 2011, but hope that it happens.

It doesn't look any different from when I was there over Memorial Day.

What date would that photo have been taken?

THey must have just started up parts of it then. CNN had a story not too long ago about the whole project being put on hold. It may be work starting to be a symbol but we'll see.

Surprisingly, it doesn't look much different than when I was there in 2006.

I don't think we can begin to appreciate what was in and what it took to clean out this hole (not even entirely visible in the photo I posted)... which is probably larger than all of Omaha's CBD alone.

It's big but it's not that big.

It's really not that large, the "hole" itself, maybe 1000-1200 feet on each side. About 3-4 Omaha-size blocks on each side. Lower Manhattan is very dense and compact.

Don't get me wrong, it's still huge considering what it is. It's very jarring to see it in the middle of NYC.
