In a way this is a surprise ... in a way it isn't. :(

CasinOmaha shuts down

http://www.siouxcityjournal.com/article ... ?FORM=ZZNR
ONAWA, Iowa -- Following a recommendation of U.S. tribal gaming regulators, the Omaha Tribe of Nebraska closed its CasinOmaha on Tuesday.

The move to indefinitely suspend operations at the casino near Onawa, Iowa, leaves 185 casino workers unemployed and the tribe without a major source of revenue.

The tribe plans to renovate and modernize the 17-year-old facility, with plans to reopen "as soon as possible,'' general manager Jim Hunt said.

I never went there, but was it as bad as some Indian Casinos I have seen?  I drove by one in Oklahoma, it was a fancy wall in front, but you walk through a door in that wall and you were in a big circus tent...

When Casino Omaha was built it was considered to be one of the most classy between Atlantic City and Las Vegas. It was clean and nice at the time. It had a big buffet/restaurant which was very good at the time. It was CROWDED and at busy times you had trouble finding an open machine.

It was very close in scale and class to Mystic Lake up in Shakopee if you know that one.

In the heyday they had a large convenience store and truck stop complex across the street, and entertainment stands (racing, concerts, acts) to the north.

When the casinos in CB opened the crowds eased off quite a bit, but it was still nice for several years.

Then it went down hill, maybe starting 5-7 years ago. Broken machines at the bar were never fixed, they scaled back on the buffet, and then it started looking dirty and seedy, but never as bad as the quonset hut casinos that are stereotypical for native gaming.

I haven't been there for maybe 2 years. Last time I remember they had some newer penny machines but the whole place was looking run-down.

A discussion on the relative classiness of casinos...

It's kind of like discussing which |expletive|-burger tastes less like |expletive|.
Stable genius.

I forgot about this thread.

I live near to this casino. The only issue that I seen is they built up the land on the parking lot without removing the old parking lot. I don't know how well that is for a base, but I am not building expert.

What, without digging a foundation or anything??
When fortune smiles on something as violent and ugly as revenge, it seems proof like no other that not only does God exist, you're doing his will.

Yea, as far as I can tell from how the old black top parking lot just flows into about a 4 foot hill of dirt. There is no ripped up edges of parking lot on the side that I could see. Unless they removed the old parking lot under the building part. I was not out there when or before they put the about 4 foot hill of dirt out there.

Edit: On this video, when the people of the Omaha Tribe is talking the news person, you will see what I am talking about http://www.ktiv.com/story/22597091/2013/06/14/blac
