Google Broadband

Post by riceweb »

Google will be rolling out high-speed internet access to a few communities across the country, and I'd like to get Omaha on the list. More information can be found at the Google Fiber for Communities website.
Google is planning to launch an experiment that we hope will make Internet access better and faster for everyone. We plan to test ultra-high speed broadband networks in one or more trial locations across the country. Our networks will deliver Internet speeds more than 100 times faster than what most Americans have access to today, over 1 gigabit per second, fiber-to-the-home connections. We'll offer service at a competitive price to at least 50,000 and potentially up to 500,000 people.

From now until March 26th, we're asking interested municipalities to provide us with information about their communities through a Request for information (RFI), which we'll use to determine where to build our network.
I think Omaha would be ideal for this project, as we have such a vibrant entrepreneurial drive, largely rooted in technology.

Metro Pushing For Google's Next Big Thing
Area In Running As Test Site For Super High-Speed Internet

KETV wrote:Council Bluffs and Omaha have been engaged in a collaborative effort to lure the Internet giant into the area. Council Bluffs mayor Tom Hanafan said the metro is a logical choice because Google already has a facility up and running here. "I just think it's a better place to try a test site and offer this Internet service -- right here in the middle of the country with a lot of opportunities for growth and development that we have that other people don't have," Hanafan said.

I don't get it. Mine said Topeka, as well. Does this mean Topeka is getting the fiber to home or has the almighty google forgotten how to track IP addresses?

for those who don't live on the internet, Topeka, KS changed its name to Google, KS as part of its marketing campaign for Google Fiber.

So did they award it to Topeka, or just give a tip of the hat to a brilliant campaign?

No, it is just Google's annual April Fool's joke tipping their hat to Topeka for changing their name to Google, now Google is changing their name to Topeka.
