DSM Downtown Development Lauded in NYTimes

Post by StreetsOfOmaha »

Des Moines' extensive downtown development is praised in this piece from the New York Times.

Shhhhhh! You'll upset a few people that think Omaha is far and away better than Des Moines.

Huge difference between a drag show and a Britney Spears concert. Drag queens are much more talented.

I have a favorable opinion of Des Moines but as I was talking with wags the other day I don't think it's got much on Omaha.

it said there are 75,000 people working in downtown DSM.  Does anyone have a figure on downtown Omaha?  I thought i'd heard one time that there was something like 50?

I don't know about the current number, but I remember reading something about 60K people working in DTO in the 1960's.

Hmmm. That number for DSM's downtown workers seems a little high. I have nothing to base that on, though. I'm guessing they would include the capitol and all the state offices around there, too, which would account for a lot of workers. In terms of distance, I'd say that would be like including Mutual, Keiwit, and Creighton's workers in the DTO worker population, and maybe they do. I don't know that either.

Can anyone shed some light?

You're about right Streets but they still have a slightly larger DT worker population. Omaha's is around 35,000 the last I heard.

Right, but I doubt that includes Mutual, Keiwit, or Creighton.

We can always learn things from the neighbors.  After all, they learn things from us.
