Bluffs airport receives $1.2M grant
. . . A federal grant of nearly $1.2 million has been approved for continued improvements to the airport’s major expansion project. . . .

The money will be used to create a concrete apron, or parking area for airplanes, by the new terminal, and replace concrete that’s breaking up by the hanger area, according to director Dan Smith.

This project is just one of several either just completed or will soon start, he said. . . .

“We just built 10 additional hangers and plan on building four extra-large hangers for corporate jets,” Smith said. . . .

Most of the construction on the new terminal has just been completed. . . .

About 120 students from the University of Nebraska at Omaha are taking flight training at the airport, he said, plus many from Iowa Western Community College, who are taking courses at the school’s flight maintenance facility there. . . .

Bluffs airport renovated, has new features
Council Bluffs has a new front door. And when people arrive, they’re getting the red carpet treatment.

The Council Bluffs Municipal Airport recently opened a $1 million terminal as part of an ongoing expansion project.

To have such a nice facility is important for any airport, and the adjacent community, especially to first-time visitors who arrive by air, said Lisa LaManita, president of Advanced Air, which oversees daily operations at the city owned facility. . . .

I forgot to post this, but the last Helicopter pilot I had come to town was REALLY impressed wit the new terminal.  He thought about hanging out all afternoon and flying back at night.  Night hours are more valuable to a pilot's license than the day hours and with the nice accommodations at the airport he could have watched football all afternoon before it got dark.

How so? Hours are hours.  Sure extra night hours are good for most pilots as many of us do most of our flying during the daytime, but the difference between day or night doesn't add any "value" to a license.  Depending on his license he may be required to have a certain number of night landings to maintain proficiency.

Smith bids farewell to Bluffs airport
A new era is beginning at the Council Bluffs Municipal Airport.

Monday was the last day for Dan Smith, who came there in 1992, serving these last 16 years as the airport authority’s executive director.

His annual contract was not renewed by the Airport Authority’s Board of Directors. . . .

Along the way, Smith led the charge for a major expansion project, including a much larger runway and improved features to help pilots land and depart. A new terminal welcomes arriving passengers, many of whom probably view this as their first impression of Council Bluffs. . . .

Sure has. That is the nicest "small town" airport I have ever been at!
