Omaha's first year on the list, the title explains itself.

Wow, I'm actually pretty surprised that we're this high up the list already.  I'd say that's pretty remarkable progress over the past few years.  If the Harney Bikeway is built, I have to think that would boost us up quite a bit more.  Hopefully recognition like this helps to build awareness and motivation to continue to improve our bicycling infrastructure.

Peter Flax, the Editor-in-Chief for the magazine that made this list, says this is very impressive for a city new to the list to rank so high.

Actually, this is the second year on the list. Last year, we were ranked 42nd.

Honestly, I don't see us getting ranked any higher until we spend the money on bike infrastructure and increase bike commuters.

Even some basic low tech/low cost stuff like making an East-West connector from the 144th street N-S trail between the dams to the Big Papio trail (which would cost some paint and signage, but could be built using existing bike trails and adding some bike lanes into low traffic roads between 132 and 120th.

I am confident that if we mapped the city, we could find more $2000 dollar improvements that would make biking to work more practical, and that for $250K, we could get a large mulitplier effect on our existing trails.

State of Nebraska pulls a #47 ranking for being bike friendly, according to League of American Bicyclists:

That's a great start! Especially considering all the hills ;-)

Haha, as a cyclist, I agree. Why some hipsters still try to run fixies here is beyond me.

Unfortunately, our bottom-of-the-barrel ranking is a result of poor policies, regulations, and infrastructure.
