Florence - Fort Calhoun Trail?
Florence - Fort Calhoun Trail?
Any chance there will ever be a Florence to Fort Calhoun Bike Trail? It could follow the old Chicago and Northwestern Railroad Right of way, most of it still un-developed and land in-tact. It would be a beautiful ride through the hills an could easily rival the Wabash over in Pottawattamie county. Eventually it could go all the way to Blair, however it would need to separate from the old Railroad Right-of-way near the power plant where the tracks are still in place and active.
Thoughts?

Already exists. Â Florence to Dodge Park, then Dodge Park north along the road past Neile woods and then parallel's the county road in Washington County (P49, I think) to the road connecting Boyer Chute to Ft Calhoun.Brad wrote:Florence - Fort Calhoun Trail?

Really? Is it paved the whole way? I know the City recently completed work extending the trail pretty far north along Pershing Drive but I didn't realize it connected to anything that took it that far north.

It's not really clear what you mean by all that. You can see a portion "from the road" (what, like in Google streetview?) and a portion "near Washington County?"

If this is the same trail I'm thinking of, if you take John J Pershing past NP Dodge Park, which this bike trail parallels, there are several parts as you go north of Neale Woods where one could see the bike trail from the roadway as you are in your car. I think this is what he means by "visible from the road". Like with your eyes. It's kind of like the suburbs or urban areas where the sidewalk is also visible from the road, except that this is in the countryside and kinda by the border to Washington County. He also means that there are portions of this trail (in or near the Washington County area) which share the shoulder with a local roadway. In urban terms, that's like of like a shared lane, except that it's on the shoulder. This is all hearsay though. Chances are he's full of |expletive| and it's actually a conspiracy to create pedestrian sprawl "near Washington County".

The road that I discovered this trail from is the county road that goes south from Boyer chute to Surfside(RIP) to Neale Woods, then to Pershing at Dodge Park. Â The trail winds through some river bottom woods, then goes north along the county road, at points along the shoulder and at poStreetsOfOmaha wrote:It's not really clear what you mean by all that. ints breaking from the road. Â You can see the trail sections from the road.

Pershing to North River Drive (paved trail)
North River Drive to Washington County Road P51
Trail then crosses County Road 34 and goes to Boyer Chute. Â Alternatively, you can ride CoRd 34 to Ft Calhoun.
Here is a Google map to orient yourself.

The trail itself winds close to and away from the roads and in a couple of places is a shoulder to the road.
The trail by the Chute is sand covered due to the flood, so  the road is a better bet to go to the Chute.
Tuna, I expect an apology.[/url]

bigredmed, thanks for the additional details. Again, wow, I didn't realize the trail continued that far north.
Tuna, what a bizarre and incoherent response. Seriously, I don't even know where to begin with explaining how weird and off-base that was... so I guess I'll just let it lie. :what:

Ha. Well it is. For starters it was filled with unprovoked, vindictive sarcasm that has nothing to do with the topic under discussion, and further, it has this weird manichean tone as if I think urban is good and rural is bad, or as if I'm only a specialist in one and not the other.
Again, just bizarre. I'm glad you agree.

Manichaean tones, also what I was thinking.StreetsOfOmaha wrote:Ha. Well it is.
