Railroad Plans to Restore One of the Largest Steam Locomotives Ever Built
Union Pacific Railroad wrote:Omaha, Neb., July 23, 2013 – Union Pacific Railroad today announced it reached an agreement with the Southern California Chapter - Railway & Locomotive Historical Society in Pomona, Calif., to transfer ownership of one of the world's largest steam locomotives, Big Boy No. 4014, back to Union Pacific.

Union Pacific plans to relocate No. 4014 to Cheyenne, Wyo., where Union Pacific's Heritage Fleet Operations team will work to restore it to operating condition. Details regarding those efforts will be made public at a later date.

Union Pacific donated No. 4014 to the historical society December 7, 1961. The locomotive arrived January 8, 1962, at its current display location at the Rail Giants Train Museum in Pomona.

No other railroad has retained its historical equipment or honored its American roots like Union Pacific.

"Our steam locomotive program is a source of great pride to Union Pacific employees past and present," said Ed Dickens, senior manager - Union Pacific Heritage Operations. "We are very excited about the opportunity to bring history to life by restoring No. 4014."

Just saw that, I knew they were considering it.  It will be awesome to see the first time coming into Omaha.  For those that don't follow trains as closely as Brad :;):    4023 at Kenefick Park is a a sibling.

They pulled the 4014 Diesel out of service a couple weeks ago and the rumors started flowing that it was going to be re-numbered. Instead it gets to pull the 4014 back to Cheyenne.

Those of you that don't follow trains, the Big Boy is numbered 4014 and that's the number of the first diesel in the video, the second diesel in the video is 4884 which goes kind of matches steam locomotive 844 which has been to Omaha several times over the past few years.

A fire was lit in the BigBoy yesterday for the first time in 60 years.

Also, N.P. "Sandy" Dodge, president of NP Dodge will be part of the 150 anniversary of the Golden Spike celebration this summer.

http://trn.trains.com/news/news-wire/20 ... -announced
Trains Magazine wrote:Finally, UP also announced that at its May 9 ceremony in Ogden, where Nos. 4014 and 844 will touch noses Union Pacific Chairman, President and CEO Lance Fritz and Utah Gov. Gary Herbert will be joined by Margaret Yee and Sandy Dodge to tap a ceremonial spike. Yee's ancestors were among thousands of Chinese immigrants who forged the transcontinental railroad for Central Pacific. Dodge is a descendent of Gen. Grenville Dodge, Civil War veteran and Union Pacific's chief engineer during construction.

Yesterday after lunch, I and a friend and co-worker, who is an admitted hardcore railfan, drove out to Valley to see this. It was awesome! Fascinating, powerful! We were obviously on the other side of the tracks from where you were. We found the shade of a tree to wait and kind of stayed there, even though the light for photos would have been better on the other side.

Image

According to my friend, there is a significance to the "Big Boy" lettering on the front. Apparently they had some other pet name picked out for this locomotive when it was first built, but one of the workers scrawled "Big Boy" in chalk on the front, almost like it's shown here, and the name stuck.

They have changed the display for Saturday, it has been moved from the Durham to the Union Pacific Home Plate by TD Ameritrade Park.

Not sure exactly why, but I would assume its because its been drawing gigantic crowds everywhere they have gone. Chicago was expecting 2000 people a day over 3 days (6000 total) and they ended up with over 45,000 people!

I put together this 8min YouTube video with all my Union Pacific Big Boy 4014 clips from the past month. Turned out decent considering I shot it all with my iPhone7. There are some places where the camera shakes due to a makeshift tripod.

Enjoy
