Front license plates:

Post by damonhynes »

Been seeing a lot of late-model cars with not only no Nebr plate on the front, but no bracket for one! It's obvious that the taxes have been paid because there's a rear plate, but do LEOs have more important things to worry about?

Not having two plates is probable cause for a traffic stop, but the police have better things to do. If they do ticket you, it's a non-moving violation and $25 plus court costs. I'm sure that a large portion of Corvette owners can pay the fee versus drilling holes to mount front plates.

You are mistaken. I had to learn the hard way that not having a front license plate is an invitation for trouble. Never ever ever give the police a reason or excuse to pull you over. A lawyer will tell you that much for free.

I know a couple guys at work that don't have a front plate or a bracket. If they get a "Fix-It Ticket" they use double sided tape, stick the bracket on, go get the ticket signed off, and then go home and removed the tape and re-wax the bumper.

There was a bill, that passed this year where you didn't need to have the front plate displayed if your vehicle didn't have a front mount originally or for another number of reasons such that I do not remember. The catch is you needed to pay for. $100 sticker for the front window. Not sure when this bill that passed was / is to go into effect. It is also possible that I am imagining all, this since I didn't go look it up,again right now.

Found it. Beginning January 1, 2017, one license plate shall be issued, upon request and compliance with this subdivision, for any passenger car which is not manufactured to be equipped with a bracket on the front of the vehicle to display a license plate. A license decal shall be issued with the license plate as provided in subdivision (ii) of this subdivision and shall be displayed on the driver's side of the windshield. In order to request a single license plate and license decal, there shall be an additional annual nonrefundable registration fee of one hundred dollars plus the cost of the decal paid to the county treasurer at the time of registration

For $100, they should throw in the decal. That's ridiculous.

This is correct. Lawyers, former and current law enforcement officials, just about anyone with any degree of legal merit, will instruct you to always be in compliance with all vehicle
Enforcement statutes, as to avoid any unnecessary interaction with police officers.

This is something that, by extension, applies to many other circumstances outside of traffic/vehicle matters.

That said, I drive a new Tahoe, and I'm not drilling any f'ing holes in my front fender for those plates. I guess I'm just banking on the fact that I am largely law abiding...

People should definitely keep their vehicle registration and plates in compliance. The point I was trying to make is that as long as the vehicle is properly registered, not having a front plate isn't *that* big of a deal, as long as the owner is willing to accept the inconvenience of an occasional traffic stop and fix it ticket every now and again.

Instilling a $100 tax for a window sticker to replace a front plate on vehicles which can't easily display one is the most Nebraska way to deal with the issue.

How large is the sticker?

Since it is not in play till Jan 1 it is likely that no one knows yet.

Does anyone know what "any passenger car which is not manufactured to be equipped with a bracket on the front of the vehicle to display a license plate" means? I have a 2014 Tesla that has a bolt on bracket form under the car with some glue to keep it in place for the front plate. There are no factory holes drilled in the front. The only cars I can think of are older cars had molded slot in the bumper that would not qualify.
