Diverging Diamond Interchange (DDI)

Post by Brad »

Nebraska has stared using the Diverging Diamond Interchange (DDI). The first one that I know of is on 48th & I80 in Lincoln.

1. Here is 48th & I80 from Google Earth

2. Here is a youtube video(From another state) showing how they work.

Funny you brought this up. On our way to Branson last weekend we went through the one in Springfield, MO, which was the first one built in the US. Traffic seemed to flow pretty smoothly through it. It was a little weird driving south on the left lanes though.

Never seen one in person, but found this:

A) The DDI can be placed in any setting. A DDI in a rural area may have the advantage of different signal progression options. A DDI in an urban area has the advantage of being able to fit in a tight area. The traffic volumes usually guide the consideration for the DDI no matter what setting it is in.

Nice! That's oddly progressive of the NDOR (NDOT?)

There's one in the Chicago suburbs near the border of Aurora and Naperville:

There is one off of I29 just south of KCI and another on the Kansas side of the metro.

Yep, NDOT now. And I agree. I'm surprised to see one here too. Although they have been SPIs for a while which is a little more progressive than the diamond and folded diamond interchanges typically used. But those are only really used in urban areas (like Dodge).

I wonder if they'll eventually do the 192nd St interchange as a DDI. Seems like a good opportunity.
