I heard that they are gounding their bigger planes not the 717s, so the cuts will probably be on the longer routes, tho they can still use the 717s on the long range trips.OMATOL wrote:Southwest adding DEN 3x a day will be a nice boost. So far OMA is doing pretty well when compared with airports across the midwest in the same size category.
However, keep on eye on Midwest Airlines. Things do not look good for them. They are rumored to be grounding 5 of their 717s which could affect their Milwaukee or DC service here.

Midwest used to be my favorite airline to fly, back when they had the nonstop to LAX and the single-seat to ATL.ricko wrote:I didn't know that Midwest had anything but 717's, DC9's and MD80's (all smaller jets) in their fleet, and I've been a customer of theirs since the beginning.
I'm not an expert on which plane is which, but they always had the "smaller full size" planes, if that makes any sense. Mostly the same ones that Allegiant and American fly, but they had 2x2 seating instead of 3x2 that the other airlines have.

There's a World Herald survey on effect airfares have had on your flying linked to this story...

Perhaps no surprise... August saw passenger traffic drop a whopping 9%... we're still clinging to .5% annual growth... that will probably change after this month though.

KCI down over 12% for the month & 3 3/4 % for the year.
No word yet on Lincoln but I'd guess not good either when you take away Allegiant.
It will be interesting to see how the numbers for OMA are with the addition of Southwest to Denver. Â I haven't looked closely but I thought they dropped a flight or two to other existing cities.
Yes you are right. Â Southwest has added 3 flights to Denver effective Sept 2nd. Â But also, Eppley looses a flight to PHX, LAS and Midway, leaving 2x to PHX and LAS and 5x to Midway. Â This will leave southwest with a net gain of no additional seats from Omaha. Â Should see higher loads though on the remaining flights. Remember that the end of August/ Beginning of Sept, Continental has dropped the 3 flights to Cleveland, United dropped 1 flight to Denver for 5 left, American dropped 1 flight to Chicago, Delta is dropping a few flights, Northwest goes to smaller planes and Expressjet closed up their branded service which OMA lost Tuscon, San Diego and LA/Ontario. Â
Look for continued negative numbers, Eppley is just real greatful for the Southwest to Denver to keep the numbers at the airport from really taking a dive!
Hopefully Cleveland will come back though, planes were really full since it started last March.
Surprised no one beat me to this

As competitors in Kansas City and Des Moines are seeing passenger numbers fall compared to last year --- Eppley is holding steady and even seeing a slight gain.
Eppley Airfield's new statistics show a fairly steady performance. Passenger boardings during October were down 1.4 percent, but year-to-date, boardings are up slightly, said Don Smithey, of Eppley Airfield.

DSM did pick up LAX from Allegient. Â And OMA & DSM gained flights to LGA. Â KCI got flights to LGA and JFK. Â I wouldn't count on that new terminal at Eppley soon unless the numbers turn around some time. Â
I think it might be time, what with a new administrator at Eppley, for Eppley to advertise again. Â It's dog eat dog out there & DSM, LNK & MCI advertise while OMA just sits there playing nice.

I'm not sure that I agree. Â Airports like Lincoln are almost forced to advertise because of their trend of loosing passengers.NovakOmaha wrote:

KCI advertises in Omaha & Des Moines every so often, not because they are losing passengers but because they want more. Â Eppley did that in the 80's with its "We're Flying" campaign. Â Don Smithey always said that Eppley's catchment was a 200 mile radius around Omaha. Â What's wrong with ads? Â Nothing personal Lincoln, Sioux City and Des Moines, but Eppley does have more frequency and service than you all, so if you're inclined to save money or time or for whatever other reason, give us a try. ÂMr.Nuke wrote:I'm not sure that I agree. Airports like Lincoln are almost forced to advertise because of their trend of loosing passengers.NovakOmaha wrote:

There is an attitude on the part of "some" in Lincoln & outstate Nebraska as well as Des Moines that it is a crime to fly from Eppley or for that matter even go to Omaha. Â I've never understood it but there it is.

You don't understand why it's not in these cities' best interest? Â I think it's pretty obvious. Â Keeping your business LOCAL improves OUR local economy (the one where we pay taxes and have a vested interest in). Â We always try to keep our business in our local market. Â The more people that go to surrounding airports, the less service and options they will have at their local airports (which we have just as many non-stop destinations as Omaha). Â Omaha isn't convenient compared to the seven minutes it takes me to get to Des Moines International Airport (plus higher parking costs and hotel if it's an early flight). Â I'm not driving to Omaha (2 hrs) to fly to another connecting city...and then to my destination...to save $100. Â We don't bother checking rates from Eppley anyway. Â It's not "bias" towards Omaha either, I wouldn't go to MCI, MSP, CID, or MLI.NovakOmaha wrote:Mr.Nuke wrote:NovakOmaha wrote: There is an attitude on the part of "some" in Lincoln & outstate Nebraska as well as Des Moines that it is a crime to fly from Eppley or for that matter even go to Omaha. I have a friend that is going to be flying up here for my graduation...and he wanted me to drive to Omaha to pick him up (on Southwest). Â I told him if he wanted a ride, rent a car and drive himself over (which evaporates any savings). Â I'm not driving 4 hours round-trip to save him $100.

Des Moines  -14.79 for the month and -17.10% for the year
KCI Â -19.3 for the month and -20.1 % for the year
Lincoln did pick up flights to Atlanta and Salt Lake City with one flight a day each. Â
Eppley picked up flights to La Guardia as did Des Moines although AA dropped LGA from DSM.
DSM also picked up weekly flight to LAX.
It really is time for Southwest to step up with a new destination or two from OMA. Â BWI, LAX and/or Orlando would be nice.
Here are some interesting facts, per the USAToday travel section online:
Eppley will offer an average of 7,963 seats available per day in May 2009, a 0.1% decrease from 2008.
Lincoln, 495 seats, down 20.3%
Des Moines, 3,232 seats, down 7.1%
KCI 19,224 seats, down 14.1%
They have the table online all the time and change it monthly. Â Again, Eppley appears to be faring better than its neighbors. Â KCI has been losing some Southwest flights and destinations over the past couple of years. Â Recently Southwest dropped KCI-TUL and cut back on service frequency to Chicago.

The April numbers are out. Â Eppley is performing better than the others in the region by a wide margin. Â
Airport                  month               year
Eppley                  -1.5%                -4.6%
Lincoln                  -14%                -16%
Des Moines               -11.75%               -13.56%
Kansas CIty               -11.82%             -15.34%
Others can spin it all they want but OMA is the one not in double digit losses. Â I still wonder when Southwest is going to wake up and add some flights at Eppley...Orlando, BWI, LAX, etc.

The May numbers as out for OMA, LNK and DSM. Â Kansas City must have lost the operating instructions for their abacus.
OMA Â May -4% Â YTD -1.5%
LNK Â May -17% Â YTD -16%
DSM Â May -9.21% Â YTD -12.64%
OMA still faring much better than its neighbors. Â Looks like June will be good as well. Â My mom flew back from Chicago last Tuesday with a planeload of Texas fans coming in for the CWS final.

Actually, there will be come downsizing going on in the future. Â Southwest is going from 3x to 2x daily to Las Vegas, even though load factors are currently between 85-95%. Â Northwest is moving all flights out of Memphis to RJs and removing some mainline from Minneapolis in favor of CRJ9s. Â I have heard that Frontier might be introducing Q400 turboprops from Denver, slowly removing Airbus mainline flights.NovakOmaha wrote:The April numbers are out. Even though the passengers numbers are encouraging, things look "interesting" on the horizon.
