For the first time ever, Union Pacific wants you to route the steam excursion.
This is your chance to help the UP Steam Team decide where these steam giants will travel.

Spectacular photos... I trust Brad was out this morning as well. Â That last one would make O. Winston Link proud (well, at least if you gray scaled it).
I haven't been following this foray into the metro... but I came to realize, while sitting in bed this morning, that I was hearing UP 844 from inside my house! (running along Bob Boozer drive, a mile away)... I checked the GPS location and sure enough, that's what it was.

Seth,Seth wrote:Those are some incredible photos. The old smoke and steam-belching locomotives sure do look grand.
What are the metal covers on the sides of the boiler at the front? Both of these locomotives have them, but most of the steam-powered ones I've seen don't.
I believe what you are referring to are smoke deflectors. The term 'elephant ears' have also been used to describe them. The intent is to use aerodynamics to lift the exhaust high above the train. They are generally found on high-speed locomotives designed for passenger service. 844 and 3985 were capable of speeds in excess of 100mph. Locomotives designed for freight service operated at lower speeds. Since smoke deflectors depend on speed, most locomotives were not equipped. Â
Brad and Alan's pictures really demonstrate their effectiveness.

It's really sad that (aside from one short line in the country), our passenger trains are significantly SLOWER than they were 50 years ago.
I chased that train all the way to Grand Island... I did 80mph almost the whole way.Seth wrote:Cool; thanks for the explanation.

UP is up to something... Â Word on the street is they are going to have a big Super Bowl train to Dallas next week.
Yesterday in the pre dawn hours they brought the UP1988 to town and have it parked over in council bluffs. Â Then today in the almost pre dawn hours they tried to sneak this train in to town, but I was able to catch it. Â
Its all I could do with the lighting conditions. Â It will probably be better with some post processing, but that will need to happen later. Â 20 min later and this photo would have been awesome! Â Like Glowing Orange sun on the train!!!
Second Units is the UP2010 Special "Boy Scout Locomotive - 100 Years of Scouting"
Third Unit is the UP7400 Special  "Susan G Colman Locomotive - Pink Ribbon Locomotive"
Next three are the Historic E9's

Re: SPECIAL Union Pacific Movements
Not UP and Not on UP Tracks, but today's Amtrak #6 will have two electric locomotives on it, which are heading to the North East corridor. They are not surnning, just being towed, but usually right behind the regular locomotives.
Today's #6 is sunning about 4 Hours Late so it should get here right before 1pm.
