www.uprr.com wrote:Union Pacific Railroad Honors President Bush 41 With Custom-Painted Locomotive

Locomotive Unveiling Sets the Stage for Railroad Exhibit at Bush Library

Omaha, Neb., October 18, 2005 – Union Pacific is paying tribute to President George Herbert Walker Bush with a custom-painted locomotive. Incorporating colors and elements of the Air Force One used during Mr. Bush’s presidency, the new Union Pacific locomotive bears the number 4141, in honor of the 41st president. The special locomotive, which replicates Air Force One’s design as a striking symbol of national pride and strength, was revealed to the former president during a ceremony near the George Bush Presidential Library and Museum on the Texas A&M University campus in College Station, Texas.

The unveiling ceremony is a fitting prelude to the grand opening of "Trains: Tracks of the Iron Horse," on Nov. 7, 2005, at the Bush Library. The much-anticipated exhibit covers the rich technological, social and economic history of the railroad industry.

"When we set out to design the Bush Library and Museum, I did not want it to be about just one person – rather, we wanted to touch a broader cross-section of American life, encompassing an eventful period of our history," President Bush said. "The ‘Tracks of the Iron Horse’ and the unveiling of UP 4141 is the latest example of our commitment to attracting the most unique, educational, and entertaining exhibits we can – and I am deeply grateful to Dick Davidson and Union Pacific for their friendship and support. If we had the UP 4141 back when I was still in Office, I might have left Air Force One behind more often!"

UP 4141 marks only the sixth time that Union Pacific has painted a locomotive in colors other than the traditional UP "Armour Yellow" paint. The design team carefully studied photos of President Bush’s Air Force One, with the goal of recreating the scheme for UP 4141. Elements from Air Force One’s wings and tail, including an American flag, were placed on No. 4141’s rear panel, with the sweeping lines of forward motion representing progress.

"The railroads have played a tremendous role in the growth of Texas and across our great country, and we’re thrilled that President Bush has chosen to showcase this wonderful history for the thousands of visitors to the Bush Library and Museum," said Union Pacific Chairman and CEO Dick Davidson. "Union Pacific felt this was such an historic and important exhibit that creating UP 4141 was an appropriate way to recognize President Bush and his life-long service to our country."

The SD70ACe locomotive measures 15 feet 11 inches tall and weighs 420,000 pounds with a full tank of diesel fuel. Its 4300 horsepower engine operates at 950 rpm maximum speed.

The locomotive is certified under U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) regulations for Tier 2 locomotive emissions effective Jan. 1, 2005, making it one of the cleanest locomotives in the U.S. in terms of engine exhaust emissions. It is also equipped with an event recorder, equivalent to an aircraft "black box," which records more than 30 operating parameters including speed, direction of travel and control settings.

Over the next decade, UP 4141 is expected to operate for at least one million miles.

The "Trains: Tracks of the Iron Horse" exhibit will introduce visitors to rare and unique items including the original golden spike that ceremonially marked the completion of the transcontinental railroad in 1869. The exhibit also includes a large number of historic and contemporary photographs from Union Pacific’s collection and hundreds of railroad artifacts.

Several events will take place during the course of the exhibit, including a free movie program with a railroad theme; guest lectures by prominent historians, railroad executives, regulators and rail enthusiasts, as well as modeling seminars. The Bush Library is also welcoming several model railroad clubs that will set up and operate their HO-, N-, and Z-scale model layouts in the rotunda of the library.

The George Bush Presidential Library and Museum is one of 10 presidential libraries administered by the National Archives. The museum focuses on President Bush’s personal and public life, and the archives house more than 38 million official personal documents, one million photographs and thousands of artifacts. The George Bush Presidential Library and Museum is also the official U.S. government repository for Bush Administration records.

The Texas A&M University System is one of the largest systems of higher education in the nation. Through a statewide network of nine universities, seven state agencies and a comprehensive health science center, the A&M System educates more than 101,000 students, conducts more than $500 million in externally funded research and reaches another 11 million people through service each year.

Just got this from the Omaha/Council Bluffs Yahoo Group.

The 3985 trip to St. Paul for the Democratic convention in September
has been posted on the UPRR Steam website for several months. Then
last week there was an announcement on there that the trip was
cancelled. Then this morning on Trainorders, Bob Krieger announced
that the trip is on again and that the schedule is being finalized.

When I saw Steve Lee at the UPHS convention in Topeka about 3 weeks
ago, I asked him about this trip and he said that they would layover in
Council Bluffs on the way out to St. Paul. I'm not sure what they are
doing on the way back though.

So there you go fairweather railfans.

I assume you mean the Republican convention in St. Paul, the Democratic convention is in Denver at the end of August.

UP4141 is sitting at 106th street its the DPU at the end of the train.  However as far as photos go, you can't get to it unless you know someone at that truck place at 106th and F street.

Have not been able to confirm but there may be a 34 car Union Pacific Passenger Train heading through Omaha or Blair any time now.  It is leaving the DNC in Denver on the way to the RNC in Minnesota.

Union Pacific Passenger Special leaving town tonight

Looks to be through Omaha a little after 6.  They are saying the UP 1995 Heritage Unit will pull it, but looking where the locomotives are, I bet its the 1983 Heritage Unit!  1995 is the Chicago and Northwestern and the 1983 is the Western Pacific.

Local Railroad Photographer Rick Zorko was able to catch the "special" today with UP1983 at the point in the fading light of the non daylight saving time day:

I saw that train last night as it was heading west across the bridge over I-29, wish I had had a camera with me.

The last two remaining "Unpatched" Chicago and Northwestern Locomotives are on what could be their last trip in to Omaha.

CNW8646 & CNW8701
Arrived Desmoines,IA May 14 12:26 SCBDM 14
Departed Desmoines,IA May 15 7:37 SDMCB 15
Scheduled NCOUBLUFF IA 15:44

Apparently this is the "Last Trip" for these units before they are indefinitely stored, probably back in Chicago.  I am guessing they will eventually make their way to a museum or the C&NW historical society.

Two Steam Locomotives coming to the Metro 11/2010

Post by Brad »

The Union Pacific Railroad Museum - UP Steam Locomotive No. 844 Anniversary Special

Day-long ride on the Union Pacific
Saturday, Nov. 13, 2010

You'll be ridin' on the railroad all the live-long day with this once-in-a-lifetime excursion. Climb aboard and ride in style behind the No. 844 as we steam to North Platte, Neb., where the No. 844 will be switched out for a diesel locomotive to speed us back home to Council Bluffs. But not before we go up and over the "sheep jump" at Bailey Yard, the world's largest railroad classification yard.

The Anniversary Special is a fund-raising excursion for The Union Pacific Railroad Museum in Council Bluffs, Iowa. Ticket prices and details will be posted in June, with tickets going on sale in July.

That sounds awesome! I would rather ride during the summer but early November is usually not to bad.

If its not already, the UP 1982 (Missouri Pacific Heritage Unit) will be passing through Downtown Omaha.
The UP 1995 (Chicago North Western Heritage Unit) is in South Missouri Valley holding for a track crew and will arrive in Council Bluffs some time this evening.
The UP 1983 (Western Pacific Heritage Unit) is parked in Council Bluffs, IA

"The Akasrben Special" is this weekend.  A passenger train will Depart the Durham Museum around 7:00 and take a trip out to Valley, NE where it will turn around on the WYE and head back to Omaha.  This is an Annual trip with UP executives.  Should make for some nice photos.

No word on the power yet, but RUMOR has it the 1995 and 1983 will be on thee train.  If you work for UP and want to find out the power and tell me the symbol is SCBCB-06  :;):
