Name Your Commuter Rail System

Post by Brad »

Eric Miller "Zephyr" asked me to post this.
Zephyr via email wrote: Name Your Commuter Rail System

I am working on modeling an Omaha-Lincoln commuter rail operation in HO scale and am having some difficulty deciding on a name.  So I figured what better place to ask than the folks on this forum!

What's your suggestion for a serious commuter rail system name?

To give you some inspiration (or uninspiration) here are some existing commuter rail names:
ACE (Altamont Commuter Express) - San Jose-Stockton
Caltrain - San Francisco-San Jose
Coaster - San Diego
FrontRunner - Salt Lake City
MARC (Maryland Area Rail Commuter) - Baltimore-DC
Metra - Chicago
Metrolink - Los Angeles
Metro-North - New York City
Music City Star - Nashville
Northstar - Minneapolis
Rail Runner - Albuquerque
Sounder - Seattle-Tacoma
Sprinter - Oceanside, CA
Trinity Railway Express - Dallas-Fort Worth
Tri-Rail - Miami
Virginia Railway Express - DC
WES (Westside Express Service) - Portland
West Coast Express - Vancouver

You mean Linoma....  You could use the Linoma lighthouse as you logo.

What about using names from the past Eric?  You know all the names I ask you about that are now part of the UP or BNSF?

There's a shuttle service between the airports with the name OMALNK, the two codes for the airports.

Wow.  It just struck me where the name Linoma came from.

Too bad they are letting that lighthouse fall into such disrepair! :(

I think Omalinc or Linoma Express would be obvious good choices.

It would be nice to avoid the OMALiNK name and come up with something more inspiring.

Brad, are you thinking of something like the Burlington's Nebraska Zephyr or the Rock Island's Corn Belt Rocket?

Another direction is to go with something more geographic like Platte Valley Flyer.

Any other ideas?

You guys are (as we say in the design world) over thinking it.

Just call it OmaLinc. It's simple, easy to say, it says both WHAT it is and WHERE it goes.

OmaLinc just doesn't roll off the tongue.  It's sterile and forced.  I actually don't think Husker Express is all that bad considering it would be in the cornhusker state.  Seven or eight saturdays in the fall, it would be used extensively for Husker fans as well.

Thanks everyone for your suggestions.  However, I think I will go with my own idea, Nebraska Rail Express:

Image

I want a name that would be systemwide, not describing one corridor, because there would be future extensions to Fremont, Sioux City, and Nebraska City that would carry the same name.  The NRE seems to fit that bill.

Your original question was:

So, if you wanted a Nebraska rail system name I would've came up with others:

Nebraska-Link
United nebraska railway
Nebraska State Express
Cornhusker express

Nebraska metro-link
River racer

I'm interested in forming a committee to ensure that the commuter rail bridge over Lake Ashland is aesthetically pleasing and of superior design.  Would you care to join.

I'm actually a founding member of SaveLakeAshland.org.  I know it's unheard of to actually form a group to save something that doesn't exist yet, but we are, after all, of a progressive mindset around here.
