Motorists traveling between Nebraska and Iowa at Plattsmouth's only crossing over the Missouri River must find a different route for the next six months.  On April 21, the Nebraska Department of Transportation will shut down the historic Plattsmouth toll bridge.  The span will remain closed until Nov. 1 as part of a $3.2 million federally funded bridge restoration.

Plattsmouth toll bridge reopens

Crossing the Missouri River at Plattsmouth, Neb., has been an impossible task in recent months.

Since April, the toll bridge connecting Iowa and Nebraska has been closed, forcing drivers on the Nebraska side to cross at Bellevue or Nebraska City.

"It's caused a tremendous amount of extra miles for drivers," said Plattsmouth Mayor Paul Lambert.

Starting today, that all changes.

Plattsmouth celebrated the bridge reopening Saturday. More than 100 people attended the ceremony, including Reps. Jeff Fortenberry of Nebraska and Steve King of Iowa.

The event featured speeches, hot dogs, music and the firing of a Civil War-era cannon.
