For all you train dorks, there's a HUGE amount of equipment on the tracks south of Fremont by old highway 275. Â There are cars carrying what look like stacks and stacks of assembled rail, concrete ties, and some absolutely freaking huge machinery. Â There's probably 30 pickups full of workers parked along the highway.
Something freaking cool is going on.

On Sept. 16, UP will launch a $4.2 million track upgrade project in the
Fremont area.
To be completed by September's end, the project calls for removing wood
ties and installing 14,300 concrete ties, spreading 25,000 tons of rock
ballast and replacing more than five miles of rail.
Since 2003, UP has spent $869.6 million on capital projects in Nebraska,
including $256.5 million in 2007.

UP plans 2nd track in Blair, county
Blair Enterprise wrote:Union Pacific Railroad has confirmed plans to build a second main track between Blair and Fremont in the future, a spokesman for the company said Monday. The double track will allow two trains to run at once, in opposite directions, if needed, Hinkle said. With the single track, trains that needed to get to Fremont from Iowa or vice versa had to be routed down to Omaha, to avoid a train already on the track.
I think there is enough traffic to keep trains coming to Omaha, however I bet the number is greatly reduced...
