Track Work in area of Amtrak Depot

Post by Brad »

I got a call today from another railfan.  Apparently some major track changes are taking place in front of the Amtrak depot.  It sounds like the UP/BNSF are adding a track so East Bound Union Pacific Trains on Main 2 can go directly on the the BNSF and down in to Gibson yard without the old manover where they would go in to CB, then back in Omaha in reverse, then pull forward down in to Gibson.

Here is what I guess is going on after todays phone call:

Allan "bnsfrailfan" confirmed with the track gang that yes UP will be able to take Omaha Coal Trains directly down in to Gibson yard with out all the extra maneuvers.

I wonder why they finally decided to do this after a decade of backing up?

Track work.

Post by Allan_Love_Jr »

There was a guy riding on a bicycle yesterday who asked me when is this work gonna be done at Amtrak. I told him some time next month. Some time. But other than that. Not a whole lot going on. Later.

It wasn't a slur, but pointing out the guys color didn't have anything to do with the topic, and I understand how it was easily misunderstood.

That is correct. I was not making a racist slur at all. I was merely being nice. The guy was nice. And i'm sorry.

I didn't think it was "racial slur" either but I'm curious what color was he?    :music:

My dad showed me the cantilever that is going up the other night. Those things are huge, I had no idea you can walk across them. He said there was some cameras down there a few days ago. I figured it was brad or somebody on here now I suppose it was the world herald. He said his crew will be there for at least another month.

Omaha Track work.

Post by Allan_Love_Jr »

Hey everyone.

Right after I got back from Railfanning at Oreapolis today I decided to make a run down at Amtrak this evening.

Here is that new Signal Bridge. Only half of it is now up. Plus a newer Signal right in front of it.

Here is one of the much older Tracks that BNSF removed. Looking west.

Looking east.

Here I am at the east end of the plat form.

Watch out for the special police.
I guess some sherif was arrested by a railroad officer because he kept harassing workers on the job.

All I know is that a crew was working and the sheriff kept telling the guys to move the equipment but I guess he didn't realize the UP owned the property and the special agent considered it harassment for his coworkers by the sheriff and arrested him. He was out of his jurisdiction and on UP jurisdiction at that point.  I hear small town cops can be quite annoying to the crews. I forgot what town but I can ask I suppose.

It took place somewhere in Colorado. Jurisdictional disputes are comical they remind me of kindergartners fighting over the sandbox. But just think of the territory the UP police have to cover they actually have more land then most people realize. Plus the UP can get temporary use of land and almost always has the right of way. A small town sheriff has no chance against the mighty octopus that is always backed by the government.

I took a drive down by the Amtrak Depot today. Once I got down there the this backhoe crane was already setting one of the pieces of the Track switch into place.

Then it was time to remove the other part of the switch.

Here is the UP 6670 east rolling under the new signal bridge.

WHAT? That the heck is this? Deer in Omaha? No way. This is a first.

Love the deer shots. Look how wavy the track is in that last photo!

Awesome Shots!  There are a lot of Deer down there.  A six point buck is not bad, for the city!  There is a lot of wooded areas down there.  Josh and I saw about 2 dozen one morning just north of the depot on 7th street.

The track shots are cool too!
