Big Mama's Kitchen And Catering

Post by Coyote »

After being on Diners Drive Ins and Dives, the Travel Channel, Ludo Bites, and maybe her own reality show, I finally stopped in at Big Mama's. Got there early before anyone else, so I had a chance to talk to Big Mama herself. Nice lady,, great and friendly staff. Asked what I could write home about and they suggested the Catfish, with Mac n Cheese and Sweet Potato Casserole (with cornbread of course) it was excellent, even though their fried chicken is the most well known around. Unfortunately they were out of okra, she never knows how much to get, plus most of her produce is from locals. Funky building and cafeteria, but it is the food you are going there for. By the time I left the place was half full, with a great mixture of business people and locals. Pictures of her life and family all over the place. Her father played bass guitar in a circuit band back in the days. One of those you have to visit at least once places.

Went there a couple of years ago.  Unimpressed.  Terribly overpriced.

Overpriced? You must eat at KFC too much.

Tried to go there a couple of years ago on a Saturday and called for a reservation and directions at 4 pm.  They were cleaning up for the day.   I can't ever seem to catch it when it's open.  Pass.

Unnecessary comment, but I'll indulge you.  I actually don't eat KFC at all.  I thought the prices were too high for what you got along with the bad atmosphere.  I like a good atmosphere when I go out to eat.  I felt like I was in a crusty church basement there.

Funny, it has the same tile floor pattern that my Catholic elementary school cafeteria did...

I love the oven fried chicken, but I really go for the sweet tea and cornbread. After living most of my adult life in the south, good cornbread is sometimes hard to find.

She raised all the prices after being on tv.  Not good enough to pay more than before for same food.

New Food network show with Big Mama's

http://www.omaha.com/article/20131202/N ... res-friday

Big Mama's Kitchen is back on the Food Network — and this time, the Omaha soul food restaurant is the star of its own show.

The restaurant's new series, called “Big Mama's Kitchen,” premieres Friday and is an inside look into the world of owner Patricia “Big Mama” Barron and her daughter, Gladys, who manages the restaurant.

“With three generations in the kitchen,” the Food Network press release reads, “things are bound to get messy.”

Good for her, she mentioned to me that this was a possibility, when I was last there.

If I remember correct it was not that long ago you were there.  Betting it was more than a possibility at that time. Bet filming was already going on.

They did a pilot already, among others, so hers must have finally made the cut.

lol... Does a Bear |expletive| in the Woods?  What doesn't have scripted drama anymore...   I almost can't watch TV anymore because every show has it.

Funny thing 5-10 years I was complaining because all the TV was written for people with ADD, now its written to maximize the drama...

I’ve eaten at Big Mama’s Kitchen before and liked it.. I’ve always been concerned though, at its present location, if they could maintain business and if not..ultimately close..

I’m glad to see that’s not the case and plans are in the works to move to this new location :thumb: ...
