Benson Brewery & Tavern (6059 Maple St)

SPLIT FROM THE 318 NORTH END THREAD
RMM123 wrote:I met the guy over thanksgiving while he was working on the Benson location, he currently lives in NY or DC but grew up here and is moving back to Omaha once the Benson building is ready to go, he is planning of spring early summer, they have been delayed with liquor license issues related to a church that is now gone. The Benson location is going to be a small gastropub with a small 7bbl brewery, he said the building was built as a silent movie theater around 1910 but was in awful shape when they bought it. I think he said the downtown building is going to be production focused brewery with an area open to the public with wood-fired pizza. Not really a brewpub but more of a brewery that bottles and kegs beer. He did mention that they were having some ongoing issues with the liquor license because of a retail church located a few store fronts down, they have federal and city approval but the state is waiting to approve until the state can verify that the church is gone, which it is so this should just be a formality.

I hadn't heard of the Benson project yet... The more breweries in Omaha the better!

I wonder what the "additional retail space" mentioned in the article is in reference to...

New brewery coming to Benson

http://www.omaha.com/article/20120531/GO/705319989/1012
Cara Pesek WORLD-HERALD STAFF WRITER wrote:Miller, along with Andy Willey, also originally of Omaha, and Christian Young of Boston, bought the building at 6059 Maple St. and began renovations in 2010. Their original plan was to open the Benson Brewery last year, but right after they bought the space, a church leased the storefront a few doors down and the Benson Brewery became ineligible for a liquor license. But the church moved out after a year, and Miller and his fellow investors were able to get a plan in motion to move a bar in.

They got their liquor license last fall and building permits a few weeks ago. Miller expects the brewery to be open by August or September.

“We were finally able to secure the long-term rights to 6057 Maple Street this afternoon. This will allow us to build the outdoor seating area sketched in the attached file and eventually expand into the building next door, tripling our seating capacity and freeing up space for a few home-brew systems for the home brewers to use! We still look to be on target to open late fall early winter of this year.”

This place really seems to fit perfectly with the Benson bar scene, I expect this place to do very well and draw crowds like Jakes, Beercade etc.

Not a good sign.  Place has been getting bad reviews...

Chef leaves Benson Brewery

http://www.omaha.com/article/20131121/G ... w-location
Chef Matthew Taylor has left Benson Brewery.

The restaurant opened this summer at 6059 Maple St. Co-owner Ryan Miller said the restaurant is working on updating its menu and will roll out a new one later this month

I don't understand. If it's been getting bad reviews, wouldn't a new chef be a good thing?

Not when you just opened...and if the problems are more systemic.  Thus a new chef may or may not be a cure all.

Went there last week and had a very good experience with the food. Tasty bison meatloaf and the mashed potatoes it was served on was REALLY good. Washed it down with a house IPA. I was there at 10 on a Sunday night and it was very busy as well, I would guess about 25 people in there at all times.

mgmlot93 and I went to the Benson Brewery last night. It was my first time there, he went there when they first opened, had a bad experience, and was giving them a second shot. Overall it was a really good experience. I tried 3 beers and they were all good. He liked all the food, I liked all but one Item, and its not that that item was bad, I just didn't care for the taste. It was a Craft Sausage Plate (Wild Boar, Duck, and Rabbit). I just don't have a taste for those items.

So, you are implying that the food is better with their new cook now? How is the beer? Haven't heard good about either in a while...

Yes, Matt said it was way better than last time. I thought it was good.

The new chef was also working on some green chili for a new menu item. he sent some of it over to our table to try and it was great!

I liked the beers. I had the White Rabbit, Lord Benson, and Maple Street Porter. They were all good.

My wife and I ate there back in October. We both enjoyed it, and I thought the food and beers were good. My wife was especially excited about some of the interesting beer cocktails they had. I had the porter, which I thought was pretty good.

The place was packed, and it was definitely hipster. I don't know if I've seen that many bowties, suspenders, and mustaches all in one place before.

I got a jug of some beer and it was pretty good, I was impressed. The jug is $16.00 the first time and when you bring it back they will fill it up for $8.00.

I really like their beer every time I've been. My suggestions are update the online menu, and soak your homemade fries for 24 hours in salt water before frying so they are not soggy.

We went there July third. Fries were great. Was not a fan of the beer though. Had been drinking Boulevard at Beercade, and thought that was much better in comparison. Nice place.
