Re: Local Music
I kind of figured that Twitch was heavy metal, which I don't listen to much, so I can't judge how good they really are... I ran into the lead singer Dean Willson - an '85 grad from Westside - and eventually started talking about his band. I guess they don't perform much anymore - he was talking about an April gig for some benefit... I think it was Plastic that everyone shouts out for them to play...
Re: Local Music
They sound pretty good this type of Grunge Metal has always been popular around the area. With Slipknot originating in DM there are a lot of fans of this style around here.
I was talking to someone who my different bands I was in played shows with in the past and we remembered how diverse the local shows always were. You would have a girl with an acoustic guitar singing, metal band, punk band etc all booked to the same show lol. Can't imagine they did that in many other big cities but the everyone's included mentality made the Omaha music scene truly great.

I had the unfortunate luck to have had Dean as a fellow workmate some 20 years ago. Cant stand him or his band. Heed my warning!Coyote wrote:I kind of figured that Twitch was heavy metal, which I don't listen to much, so I can't judge how good they really are... Two groups for sure headed to SXSW from Omaha, I am sure a couple more from Omaha/Lincoln will end up down there.
Hip-Hop duo BOTH is one of them. Lots of NSFW language.
[BBvideo 560,340][/BBvideo]
New Saddle Creek signee Twinsmith is the other.

That low cost of living was one of the reasons The Mynabirds' Laura Burhenn moved to Omaha. When she left Washington, D.C., six years ago, making music was a second full-time job.
"When I moved out to Omaha it was really nice," Burhenn says. "I actually was able to find myself in an environment where I could make music full time. That's what's nice about a low cost of living."
In addition to finding time to write her debut album as The Mynabirds, Burhenn also found a thriving artistic community.
"There are all of these really incredible activists and artists who live in this town in the middle of a very conservative space in the Midwest. When you live there you realize really how much the rest of the world sees it as flyover territory," Burhenn says. "But then you get in there and you realize how many great things are happening all around you."

Laura Burhenn of The Mynabirds has moved out of Omaha, but they are still a Saddle Creek band. Their latest album was released today, a great track titled Omaha on the album.

Good read about Omaha musician Matt Whipkey has become a regular opener for Dwight Yoakam.

In September 2014, Dwight Yoakam came to Omaha to open an Eric Church concert at the CenturyLink Center.
“Through some friends, I met him the night before his show in Omaha,” Omaha rock 'n' roller Matt Whipkey said. "We got to talking and we got along, talking about music and everything. I kind of stayed in touch with him. When I saw he was playing at the Surf Ballroom, I asked if he needed an opener and he did.”
Yoakam heard Whipkey’s music -- he’d released his masterpiece, “Penny Park: Omaha, NE: Summer 1989,” the year before -- and decided to give Whipkey a shot on stage at the legendary Clear Lake, Iowa, venue.
“We kind of passed the audition I guess,” Whipkey said. “We did another one, then another one and another one. They’ve taken us all over. It’s fun.”

Article about Terrance Martin, who works with some of the biggest names in Hip-Hop and his Omaha connection.
http://www.mtv.com/news/2873240/terrace ... interview/
http://www.mtv.com/news/2873240/terrace ... interview/
Martin has done some live sets at House of Loom. Recorded at Make Believe if I remember correctly. How did you end up recording Velvet Portraits in Omaha?
Martin: After I was working on the Kendrick album, I needed a break from Los Angeles. I just needed different scenery. Me and a couple of amazing other producers and musicians all flew down to Omaha, Nebraska, to meet my father. He’s one of my favorite drummers in the world. We all got a giant loft in downtown Omaha. We lived there and wrote songs every day and just ate good food and talked. Just lived life in Nebraska where it was clean, where it was quiet. I got a chance to think about life. One of the reasons I wanted to be with my father was because I almost lost him to pneumonia. It took that [situation] to remind me how great he was as a musician.
Had you spent a lot of time in Nebraska before that?
Martin: My father always lived in and out of Nebraska. He teaches and plays there, so I remember a lot of different summers and winters — going out there to Nebraska, spending time in Minneapolis, spending time in New York. Wherever he went, I always followed. There’s a lot of soulful cats in the Midwest, and Omaha was one of those places that when you go, you can just focus.

Wasn't there live music at the shark-themed brewpub on Cass (Sharkey's?)? The old Cheyenne Social Club building that's now under the health club by the creek.
Re: Local Music
The Down Under, Love's, Marks is opening a jazz club, The Omaha Lounge.
Re: Local Music
Had never heard of Sharkey's. Found a facebook page with some old photos, looks like the most 90s place that was ever dreamed up.zippy wrote:Wasn't there live music at the shark-themed brewpub on Cass (Sharkey's?)? The old Cheyenne Social Club building that's now under the health club by the creek.

Interesting read about the stories behind The Slowdown and The Waiting Room. Both were pioneers in their neighborhoods and both are huge anchors for all the change that has happened since they opened 10 years ago.
