Lol... Just had a story on WOWT. Apparently they haven't applied for their new Liquor license yet so this "Grand Opening" may be dry!

Re: Mix (Formerly Maria Sangria)
Don't they know that could take weeks, if not months...
Re: Mix (Formerly Maria Sangria)
1. If there are still security problems - however long the bureaucratic process is to get the liquor license pulled.
2. If the bar is just terrible - however long it takes to run out of money.

Well, here might be your answer. I just got an email from groupon, or maybe it was livingsocial. Anyway, they have a new offer for Spanish food at Maria Sangria on south 11th Street. Good until August.

Maria Sangria has a Facebook page up and running, and the have been advertising events recently, including Sangria offers. So, I assume they have their license back.
Re: Mix (Formerly Maria Sangria)
Boo. It's such a nice spot, it's a shame that it keeps turning out crappy bars and restaurants.

I agree, as the only restaurant/Public establishment (besides Holland, O Dining) that fronts the GLM, you would think the city would be more proactive in making sure that such a location would offer an attraction worthy of the city, especially once the 11th St renovations begin...RNcyanide wrote:Boo. They just renovated 11th street in front of this place a year ago.

This?
http://www.omahabydesign.org/projects/u ... t-project/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
They have already restored the Brick, so all that leaves is the circular planters and getting someone to develop the lots across the street.
Developing the lots across the street would be a huge help for this section of 11th. The empty lots and huge garage door on the Landmark Center really isolates this building from the old market.
I still think the1wags's 11th Street Ped Bridge over the GLM is a fantastic idea.
As far as this building itself, I don't really think the all glass front is doing them any favors. If its wasn't for that ugly red awning, you would never know where the door is. It would be cool when they develop the lots across the street, they would put a new face on the east side of this building that would blend in with the old market more.

Yes, they restored the brick... Yes, developing the lot across the street would draw people north along 11th to the GLM, the artist space hiding the garage, hopefully would draw people south to Urban, Boiler room..., developing Kaneko and Jones street would help there also. What is going into the old Blue Barn... 11th Street still has huge potential to increase the OM wallabies, its space, and, oh, that Hammonds Hotel...

I don't think drawing people south will help the Maria Sangria building?
Also, what Hammond's Hotel? Are you talking about the empty lots they own downtown?

Re: Mix (Formerly Maria Sangria)
Looks like this "mix" rumor never panned out, the City Council is going to have a special session on the 19th just to determine whether their license should be revoked. Maybe we'll get a new place after all
Re: Mix (Formerly Maria Sangria)
They need to make this place retail. Bars and mediocre restaurants aren't doing it any favors.Coyote wrote:Looks like this "mix" rumor never panned out, the City Council is going to have a special session on the 19th just to determine whether their license should be revoked. 7-0 liquor license revoked. 6-1 occupancy revoked. They have 3 days left for occupancy.
Re: Maria Sangria
After reading Maria's idiotic comments about why her license was being revoked, I have to say it couldn't have happened to a better owner.

THANK YOU CITY OF OMAHA!! This place was a blight on the Old Market. Local businesses have worked hard for years to build the reputation of the Old Market as a fun, safe place to visit. All it takes is on bad incident and the whole thing goes to |expletive|.

Re: Maria Sangria
They might be able to take their case to the City of Omaha Administrative Board of Appeals. Here's a description of what that board hears:
"The Administrative Board of Appeals is a five-member board. The board handles all appeals concerning conflicts regarding the granting, issuance, denial, revocation, or cancellation of any permit or license by any official or department. This board meets the fourth Monday of each month."
Not sure if they can trump the City Council though.
But I hope something decent eventually goes into that location.

He said "They are some big, ugly red brick buildings"
...and then they were gone.

Re: Maria Sangria
Even if they did have access to a higher court of appeals, they better change their defense and defense team. Maria's son wAs the main defendant. He has been banned by the liquor commission from Maria's. He justified his presence by asking OPD if they were in Maria Sangria's at the present moment. He tried to make this a case of racial profiling, that the city and the Old market Business association were targeting a black and Latino establishment, using a rep from the Black Business Association, and charged OPD with excessive patrolling and enforcement. And he never addressed the fact that they were barred from being a nightclub even though they charged $10 to go upstairs, no food was ever served up there, and the business emails all still claimed they were holding parties there under the name of nightclub.
All through the procedures the son was just reading questions he had thought of before hand to ask, even if they had no relevance at the time they were asked. The best part of the procedure was when he and his neighbor, Michael's in the Market had some heated exchanges, asking him to profile his patrons...
Maria's was in no way ready to defend their business and livelihood, and were an embarrassment to the proceedings.

It appears Maria Sangria did get a few weeks reprieve from a County Judge. They were given an injunction until a hearing on Oct. 6th.

Somehow I ended up at this place last night. It was interesting. It wasn't really crowded and they were doing salsa lessons until about 1030p. The staff were friendly and the drinks were about the same price as other places. Overall, it seemed like an okay place.

Ate at this joint last year. The food was terrible, but we had a Groupon.
Drove by a few weekends ago and it was closed. Drove by again last week and it was open, but dead.
Close it down for good.
