Omaha, Cheap Eat$

Post by Coyote »

As I have posted about the Rib Eye at King Kong, and a brunch I had at 11Worth, I have to wonder about Omaha's best places for good, but inexpensive food. I was looking into Italian at Nicola's for dinner this week, but I know if can get three meals in one at Lo Sole Mio, or at Pasta Amore. I want to try Salween Thai, but looking at prices...

So my question for this thread would be - where do you go to get the best food for the buck?

To throw another restaurant/cuisine into the mix; I have wanted to try out Ming's in Papillion because it registers high on the Cheap Eats scale... But haven't tried it since I am not close to being an expert on oriental cuisine, give me General Tsao and I'm happy...

For lunch, you can't beat the sushi deal at Dragon Cafe in LaVista. Two rolls, plus soup, for $7.50. Extra rolls are only $3.50 each. Plus you are eating in a nice atmosphere.
Generally you will get the most bang for your buck at Asian and other ethnic restaurants.

We have found two places in Bellevue that have very good food for a great price. The first if Sechwan Sunrise, chinese food (next to Pizza Hut on 36th and 370). Their food is good and they have great portions. Definitely better to do take out though. (larger portions and dining area lacks atmosphere)

Another place we just found is John's Grecian Delight, gyros (inside Southroads Mall, next to the Bellevue police dept) The prices are amazing and the food is very good with generous portions. A gyro meal that includes a salad, gyro, and french fries is only $6.50. They also have daily specials one of which on Monday or Tuesday was a cheeseburger and fries for $2.95. Pretty sure you can't beat those prices. Obviously, the mall has seen its better days, but the food here was very surprising, especially for the price.

For Chinese delivery, Sechwan Sunrise is definitely good. Just be sure to never mistake Sechwan for Imperial Palace Express on Galvin, because that place was TERRIBLE.

I want to try Pho. Does anyone have a recommendation of where I should get it at?

I'm aware of the OWH article but things may have changed since then.

I'm aware of the OWH article but things may have changed since then.
1. Saigon on 122nd and Center. Central highlands Pho. Very clear broth, and no sugar added. You can get meatballs (Pho Bo Vein (pronounced Fuh, Bo, Vee En), raw steak (best, Pho Tai Nam, Fuh, Tye Nam), or cooked beef. Combination is also possible. For my tastebuds, this is the best in the city.

2. New Gold Mountain on 156th and Maple. Darker broth that resembles the color of French Onion Soup. Heavier flavor. Also good. A little sweet due to rock sugar added to the cooking process. Also has various meat combos. Again, stick with the raw beef.

There are other places, but for my money, it's #1 by far and #2 if I don't want to do Dim Sum or eat their real Chinese food. For my tastebuds, #2 makes a Ginger-soy Flounder that is the entire reason to go there. An order of that and an order of steamed broccoli with Oyster Sauce and some tea, and you and your dinner companions will be happy campers.

My go to place for cheap eats as well.
My son got a 27 on his ACT. No this score is not as high as what Jeff's son achieved. But one has to remember the paternal gene-pool my son has to overcome. On a PGPAB [Paternal Gene-Pool Adjusted Basis], my son's score is a 37 and Jeff's son's PGPAB ACT score is 19.

Jade Palace in Bellevue is DELICIOUS. Their lunch size meals are usually $7 and you get anough to fill you up. Did I mention they're delicious. For the quality of food they serve, it can't be beat. if you like spicy food I'd suggest their Kung Pao Beef (Beef, peanuts, mushrooms, green peppers). Their pepper beef is also very good. Service is out of sight.

Don't forget about Malara's if you want good Italian at a decent price.

I can't remember the exact price, but I could swear that my wife and I always get out of Salween Thai for less than $20.

I second that. We used to live at the Oaks at Lakeview behind the Ralston Arena and used to go to Horseman's every Thursday for $1 tacos. (or 3 for $2.75) They were pretty good and the super nachos were good. I got a Rueben one other time, but the meat was very tough. Overall, it was a decent cheap food experience.

Ralston Keno is similar in having cheap food specials, plus like the casinos in CB, soft drinks are free.

El Basha and Louie M's Burger Lust come to mind. Plus most Mexican and Chinese places can't be beat on price. I also like Gandolfo's Deli.

Of course those foreign buffets are cheaper. Dog meat is cheap and plentiful especially with the glut of Greyhounds around since Bluffs run closed. Seriously folks I don't trust those china restaurants at all. Out here in Millard we used to have the King Buffet in the strip mall at 136th & Deerfield(where Bakers used to be). They closed a couple of years ago but I could tell tales for hours about the bizarre events going on at that place. They used to crush cabbage behind the building by placing heads of cabbage between 2 old sheets of plywood and driving over them with a car! A friend of mine here in Millard had a house next door bought by someone that had 30 of their employees living in it at one time. Rumor was that a Chinese crime syndicate owned the place and many of the employees were in debt to them and were brought to Omaha to work in the restaurant. They would house the employees in apartments and houses like cattle.

Shirley's is good, though you have to be careful there if you are on a carb budget. I like Billy's Miracle Hills cafe.
