Grandmothers Closed

Post by BIG-T »

I was looking on FB and came across a post that had a photo of a note on the door saying that Grandmothers have lost there lease and is now closed. Any unused gift cards can be used at any Don and Millie"s or the Grandmothers in Lincoln

What is going on around here with older restaurants they seem to be closing left and right and these chain places keep popping up.

I didn't even know there was another one of those? I thought the one on Dodge that closed a log time ago was it.

I haven't been to Grandmothers in a couple decades...

That said, when Ralston's master plan came out a few weeks ago, Grandmother's wasn't in it anymore. Neither were the two banks on either side of it.

So the Grandmother's on 84th & L has closed? Are you also saying that the American National Bank to the east and Wells Fargo to the West will close as well?

When we lived in Ralston last year, we went to Grandmother's a few times. We also used the American National Bank all the time.

Not sure, I am still looking for the master plan. I thought it was more of a pipe dream than anything. I can't imagine Wells Fargo and ANB will move that eaisly. ANB is almost brand new.

Without looking up the assessor record its at least 10 years. When I was car shopping years ago the old Arby's that they took over was being demolished.

The difference between the Lincoln and Omaha Grandmothers is night and day, the Lincoln location is PACKED on their wing wednesday and pitcher deal nights.

Just checked the Assessor's site & Grandmother's property is owned by "Goodco" c/o Grandmothers. I always thought that they owned the property, so if that's true, how can they lose their lease? Wonder if Goodco is Bob Kerry? We ate there just a few weeks ago, food was good, service kinda lacking. The hostess was playing on her iphone when we came in & took her a while to acknowledge us then she left someone's credit card laying on the counter where someone could have just grabbed it.

Maybe I am looking at it wrong on my iPad, but it looks like the parking lots were bought by Grandmother's from Wells Fargo, but the land the building itself is on is owned by:

Pulling the "we lost our lease" card seems to be one of the favorite bogus reasons for a restaurant closing. We cant exactly expect them to tell us the truth which was they were loosing money and they got tired of it. I was going to go to Grandmothers again sometime this summer maybe its better this way. Last November I went to Grandmothers and ordered my favorite the French Dip. That turned out to be a mistake. The bun was a dry and old Rotellas bun with some gnarly roast beef on it. The place looked like the mess hall at Sunnydale Retirement Village. Of course they were all ordering the age old Grandmothers favorite which was the slice of bread with the slice of roast beef on top with a scoop of mashed potatoes on top of it all. I can remember being drug into Grandmothers dozens of times in the past just so somebody could get their favorite roast beef on a slice of bread with mashed potatoes. Back in the mid 80's Grandmothers was a fad in this town. Food wasn't that good but the people loved it. They even built a huge Grandmothers on 132nd center that was packed every night.

Grandmother's has become a tired, tired restaurant and bar. We used to go there for Friday Happy Hour after work back in the 1980s, but eventually we all got families and moved on with our lives. I went back a year or so ago for Sunday brunch and was shocked that the place hadn't been remodeled in 30 years. The menu looked about the same as well, except for the prices.

The "lost our lease" b.s. is just that. You know when your lease is up for renewal at least a year in advance. If you are serious about wanting to remain in business you have that issue wrapped up months before your lease expires. They were just losing money, and decided to close. Omahan's tastes had changed. Grandmothers apparently never figured that out.

We, the public, need to support the locally-owned independent places. We're the ones who decides who closes and who thrives!

Well, I guess they could blame the closure on the casinos, right?

I use to go there a lot in Friday nights for karaoke. There would be nights it was packed and others nights almost empty. DJHowie was taken by surprise also.

Places close for all types of reasons we just have to accept it, the public will go to a local place in a heartbeat to support them, but in return have good service and good food.

I agree. Omaha has more thriving independent full service restaurants and bars now than we have had in decades. And more continue to open. Grandmother's just wasn't a particularly good restaurant any longer. What customers seem to demand now is a restaurant with a "hook". An ethnic-centric menu certainly helps. Or a brew pub. Or great patio seating. Or a gorgeous atmosphere. Grandmothers had none of those things. It deserved to go bye-bye.

Former Grandmother’s building in Ralston to gain new life as mortuary
John A. Gentleman Mortuaries will be the new tenant in the building at 4712 S. 82nd St.

The former Grandmother’s building was vacated in June, leaving behind a large building that will suit John A. Gentleman’s services.

“I think there will be two funeral chapels on the upper level, and the lower level will be a reception area. I think it will work out really well.”
Belford said that work has begun on renovating the building.
“We have gutted the building,” he said. “We’re going to totally redo the inside. All the walls that were there before are gone now. It’s basically two wide-open spaces upstairs and downstairs.”
The outside of the building will also be updated, Belford said. He hopes to have everything done by the summer but doesn’t have a solid date for opening.

Well, I just don't know what to say...(but that won't stop me from trying). The possibilities are endless. The downstairs lounge where my friends and I used to get plowed on Friday evenings will now feature people about to get buried. And the upstairs, where we spent many a Sunday morning staring at the buffet spread of dead meats, will now be home to a different sort of the same thing.

Yet another JAG funeral home in a former restaurant. First a woodfired oven place and now a chicken place. Mesquite grilled or southern fried?

What was the name of the restaurant that was near 144th and Pacific? I drove by a few months ago and tried to remember but couldn't.
