Scratchtown Brewing Company

Post by Coyote »

After shooting Sandhill Cranes in the Kearney area, Brad and I drove up to Ord to see if we could get into Scratchtown Brewing Company, even though it was closed on Mondays. The front door was locked so we went in the Employees Only side door (yes, Brad asked before hand if we could visit them on a Monday) and found Mike Klimek, the Co-owner and Beer Meister, putting labels on some of the just bottled beers. Soon we were joined by Caleb Pollard, Co-owner and Chief Pusher, who gave a private tour of the facility.

First we tried all their beers on tap which were really good, but their Wonder Twins Double IPA had to be one of the best, if not the best, Nebraska beer I have had, so naturally we both came home with a Growler of this brew. We found out that Caleb is growing his own Cascade hops somewhere in the North Loup River Valley, a place where Czech immigrants came with their own beers, and he has actually found wild hops they left behind years ago.

They designed and built their own brewery on the SE corner of the town square and have self-financed their brewery, so they can be as creative as the want, provided the locals still support them. They recently held their Scratch-Patty's Day and their Scratchtoberfest where they sold out the local hotels. Valley County is a boaters paradise so they will be creating various session beers for these pilgrims.

Coming this Thursday we will be able to find their Black Eye Imperial Porter in local stores like Beertopia and some Hy-Vees, so look out for this new great Brewing Company hitting our markets soon!

The Story about finding the Wild Hops growing in the river valley was awesome! I hope once they harvest them they, the lab is able to determine their origin.

Great beer and a couple super nice guys!

Nebraska breweries win awards
MATT OLBERDING: LINCOLN JOURNAL STAR wrote: Two Nebraska breweries won awards in the 2015 U.S. Open Beer Championship, the top competition for craft brewers and home breweries.

Scratchtown Brewing Company of Ord won a gold medal in the American Imperial Porter category for its Black Eye Imperial Porter.

In the Wood/Barrel-Aged Strong Stout category, Nebraska Brewing Company of Papillion won a bronze medal.

Breweries in the U.S. and a dozen other countries entered nearly 4,000 beers and ciders in the competition, which is held annually in Oxford, Ohio.

Awesome Milestone!
Scratchtown Brewing Company wrote: Today marks a milestone for us. We are brewing our 500th barrel of beer (1 barrel = 31gallons). Now, while this isn't a ton in the whole scheme of things, its a lot for us, brewing 3 barrels at a time, in a rural setting, and selling it ALL in the taproom for the first 18 months!
To put it into perspective, that's 124,000 pints of beer!!!

In celebration, today we are brewing up "Snipe Hunter" Barley Wine. It should clock in at around 12-13% ABV and will be available later this year.

“It’s one thing to sit back three years ago and say, ‘I think these things can happen if somebody takes a risk,’” Pollard said. “It’s another thing to go out, do it, and see it happen; to be immersed in it. Then you take a step back and look at it you can only say, ‘holy |expletive|, that’s amazing.’”

As Coyote mentioned in another thread, the Stonybrook Hy-Vee got 12 bottles of Scratchtown Wonder Twins in. A few other select location got a case as well. I went to two other locations and struck out before Coyote found it today. Even with a limit of one bottle per person, it still goes really fast.

I got a infestation going here...

They have some really good stuff. I have been wanting to get up there to try their smoked Oktoberfest and during Popcorn Days in North Loup, they have a Popcorn Ale too.
