FYI, the Holland Performing Arts Center has two threads. An Event Thread in the Entertainment Forum and the Construction and Development Thread in the Urban DEVELOPMENT forum:

For those interested in this type of entertainment, take a look at the 05-06 season for the Omaha Symphony at the Holland Center. Appearances by Tony Bennet and Yo-Yo Ma highlight a pretty impressive innaugural season.

Not bad for a little cow town. I have my tickets already.

Where did you find this line up? I might have missed it because I didn't have much time to look, but I didn't see it on the OPAS site. Thx.

Check your link... I'm getting a "no such story" note on Omaha.com, although I think I know which story you're targeting.

Edit: Looks like it's a problem with Omaha.com, itself.

It appears that the OWH pulled that article off the website. Here is another one:

The OmahaChannel.com wrote: Inaugural Season Announced For Performing Arts Center
Holland Performing Arts Center, Orpheum Plan Packed First Season

OMAHA, Neb. -- Omaha's entertainment scene has a big future.

The Omaha Performing Arts Society announced the inaugural season of the Holland Performing Arts Center Tuesday. The center, at 13th and Douglas streets, will open in October with a big grand opening festival set for Oct. 21.

In concert with the Orpheum Theater, the calendar for 2005/2006 is shaping up to include something for nearly every taste. The Orpheum Theater will primarily feature Broadway musicals, dance, ballet, opera and popular entertainment. The Holland Performing Arts Center will feature classical and symphonic music, popular music, chamber ensembles, cabaret artists, and speakers and lectures.

Itzhak Perlman will be at the Holland Performing Arts Center on May 7, 2006. BalletNY is coming to the Orpheum on May 20, 2006. A speaker series is planned, including an address by Naomi Judd on March 24, 2006. Several children's and family shows are scheduled for both venues. The Oak Ridge Boys will perform Oct. 22, 2005. Broadway musicals are coming to Omaha, including "Oklahoma!" "Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat," and "Movin' Out." Tim Conway and Harvey Korman visit on Nov. 3 to recreate their comedy in the style of the "Carol Burnett Show."

It's back up now:
OWH wrote:New arts era lures stars to Omaha

It's not that they didn't try.

Or that Omaha didn't want them to come.

High-profile arts groups such as the National Symphony Orchestra, the Paul Taylor Dance Company and the Royal Winnipeg Ballet have bypassed Omaha on their major tours mostly because there was nowhere to perform.

The Orpheum Theater, the city's major arts venue, frequently was booked with performances by local groups, such as the Omaha Symphony and Opera Omaha. And there was no local presenting organization to handle the logistics of bringing groups to town.

Now that's all changing.

The three groups - as well as violinist Itzhak Perlman, country music personality Naomi Judd, jazz pianist Chick Corea, the Broadway show "Movin' Out," and a performance of "Dora's Pirate Adventure" - are coming to Omaha.

Nearly 40 acts will perform in the inaugural year of Omaha Performing Arts Presents, a new performing arts season that will begin in conjunction with the opening of the Holland Performing Arts Center in October.

The 2005-06 season will be presented by Omaha Performing Arts, a private, nonprofit group that operates both the Holland Center and the Orpheum.

The new schedule was released Tuesday.

"We will be bringing in art forms and touring artists that have never been to Omaha in the past, both for lack of a venue and because an organization such as ours didn't exist," said Joan Squires, president of Omaha Performing Arts. "Now we are able to engage these artists, work with their managements and bring these wonderful performers to Omaha."

Eight series will be offered: classical, dance, jazz, popular entertainers, speakers, encounters (experimental work in various disciplines), children's and family.

The speakers series will feature Judd; the family series will include "Dora's Pirate Adventure," based on the popular children's character, Dora the Explorer.

In addition to the eight series, special events, including a New Year's Eve Celebration with composer Marvin Hamlisch, will be offered.

The Broadway shows that will come to Omaha next year also will fall under the new lineup.

"There is really something for all ages and tastes encompassed in the season," Squires said. "We're really going to touch on a variety of parts of Omaha that might not have attended performing arts regularly."

Many of the programs will be at the $90 million Holland Center, which will include a 2,000-seat concert hall, a 450-seat recital hall and a courtyard. Others will go to the nearby Orpheum.

The Holland Center's concert hall, with its acoustical accommodations, will host the series' classical music and jazz performances. The Orpheum will continue to host opera, dance and other theatrical performances that need accommodations for scenery, such as a fly gallery and a curtain.

The new hall and season likely will enhance the city's arts reputation on a national level, said George Thompson, vice president of programs for Omaha Performing Arts.

"This complements what we already have with our local performing arts groups," Thompson said. "People can say, 'Our symphony plays in the same hall the National Symphony Orchestra played.'"

The Omaha Symphony also will play in the Holland Center. Last month, the orchestra released its 2005-06 schedule, which includes performances with Yo-Yo Ma and Tony Bennett.

Dora the Explorer isnt' the symphony but that will be a good way to show off the venue to people who might not have seen it otherwise. The Holland Center will certainly class up Omaha and DTO a bit. :)

Holland Performing Arts Center - Events Thread

Post by thenewguy »

I had the opportunity to visit the Holland Center for the first time yesterday with my oldest son. They were hosting one of their family days, and let me just say that the venue is impressive. The obvious 'wow' factor is that the acoustics are really incredible. I was so impressed that from the middle of the upper balcony, you could hear even the slightest ping from the triangle, and every instrument sounded incredible. The conductor did a wonderful job describing the movement and emotion the composers created with their music, and getting the families involved without being overly theatrical. The staff members were all very polite and helpful, and even though we were in a fancy establishment, they made everyone feel like they belonged, and were a pleasure to have there.

The fit-and-finish of the building was great, too. The wood texture, the carpet, the seats, and especially the glass stairs adjacent to the main entrance were in great condition. It didn't feel like the building has been open for as long as it has (even though it's not really that old, technically speaking).

We are looking forward to our next visit.

Hear today’s pop hits dressed to the nines in vintage glamor

Hear today’s pop hits dressed to the nines in vintage glamor with Scott Bradlee’s Postmodern Jukebox: Life in the Past Lane Tour! One part celebration of music and culture, one part “’Saturday Night Live’ for singers”, a Postmodern Jukebox show is an unforgettable trip back in time that makes Pop Music History — right at the Holland Center.

When New York City pianist Scott Bradlee created Postmodern Jukebox out of a basement in Queens in 2011, his goal was simple: to remake the pop hits of today into the classic sounds of the legends of yesterday. Miley Cyrus became The Platters. Bruno Mars became Frank Sinatra. The Spice Girls became The Andrews Sisters. Guns ’n’ Roses became Bessie Smith.

Now, nearly a decade later, Postmodern Jukebox has grown to become a pop culture mainstay in its own right, having played over a thousand shows on six continents worldwide — including acclaimed venues like Radio City Music Hall, Sydney Opera House, and Red Rocks Amphitheater. In the process, PMJ has introduced audience to many of the world’s greatest singers, dancers, and instrumentalist — many of whom have gone on to become stars in their own right.
