Hip Bao - Former Tacoville - Fredrick Square (84th and Center)

Post by nativeomahan »

Here is a place called Tacoville opening right next door to the new Jimmy Johns in front of Shopko. Any idea if this is a local concept or a chain?

Turns out this is an order at the counter, we will call your name when ready, fast food Mexican restaurant, that serves a minimal selection of beers...

Is the meat better than Taco Bell or Taco John's? Taco Inn in Lincoln is fast food but I really like it because their meat is much tastier that TB or TJ.

The meats looked like they were marinated and in holding bins. When I found out they served beer they redid my order, and the manager had to tell the crew that the first order of a burrito supreme was the same as the second order (with a Corona), and they didn't need to fulfill the second order. That was when I saw that they processed all orders right there in front. There was also a back room (where the manager retrieved my beer, even asking if I wanted a lime in it), but I couldn't tell what was concocted back there, I just guess the tortillas...? The burrito was kind of sparse, but was very flavorful with all the ingredients.

Not bad at all, the $3.00 Burrito Supreme certainly was about what it was worth, I was a little surprised that it was as thin as it was, compared to other Mexican fast food, but again, the additions made it worthwhile.

I've read how this was a "legendary place in Oklahoma City" lol..

From what I see, it looks to be a "meh" place to me..

That said, I'm glad Omaha was chosen as its first expansion city..

I'll give it a shot the 1st week of August after they've (hopefully) worked out all the kinks, and let you know what I think...

Ciao..LiO...Peace

With a name like "Tacoville" I guess I was expecting a place like Voodoo taco which has lots of different tacos on the menu... I had the Combination Burrito and the Sancho. I guess it was edible for $6.

I didn't find the gigantic pan of taco meat and the gigantic pan beans right behind where you order very appetizing. I'm sure it goes on everywhere, but just looks odd.

I tried going to Tacoville today to use my Pinpoint, and they had a sign on the door saying that it was in their best interest to close. Not sure if that means permanently or not, but my guess is they are. If thats true, they only lasted a bit longer than a year.

I only ate there right after it opened. I thought they had decent food and visibility... I wonder if they franchised too far away.

I ate there about a half dozen times when I still worked in Omaha. I really wanted to like this place but never really thought they were that great. Food was average at best. Served on the cheapest paper plates you could every but, and service was marginal at best. Really wanted to see it work but can't say I am surprised with all the other options out there at their entry point.

EDIT TO ADD

No mention of being closed on their FB page or their web site.

I guess I am not surprised. I went there many times. It wasn't anything special, but it was cheap, fast, easy, and right by my house... sometimes after work, that's all your looking for...

Hip Bao is pretty good. Less fast than casual, but good food. Noodle bowls, steamed and fried dumplings, potstickers and some Chinese sandwiches, plus congee. The staff is mostly young and with very limited English familiarity. I wish them success.

My wife, our son, and I ate at Hip Bao today. I was expecting a really long wait, but it wasn't too bad. The food was really good. It's a small menu of what would mostly be considered appetizers so you shouldn't go there if you're looking for a standard meal. But I can stand by the quality of the food, if you like dumplings, buns, etc., this is a really good option.

I have a completely different opinion than you two. I tried the bao, pan fried bao and dumplings. All were super bland and the homemade hot sauce added zero flavor or heat. I give them 6 months.

I liked the food, but I do think they will have trouble. Not because "Omaha isn't ready for it" or anything stupid like that. Their undoing will be that a restaurant with their type of menu needs to be in a place with foot traffic and people living nearby, like Benson, Dundee, or the Old Market. It's hard to imagine enough people wanting to drive to what really amounts to a tasty snack.
