The last steak I had at 801 was freakin magical.  I also didnt have to pick up the tab, which probably allowed me to enjoy more freely!

Actually, I've done both recently. I would put Peter Luger ahead.

However, I quit recommending Peter Luger to people from around here just due the fact that the way they prepare and serve the steak is not what people from around here expect.

You can catch Peter Luger's on either Food TV or the Travel Channel from time to time.

That place is a true classic. It's been there forever. The neighborhood was kind of iffy for a number of decades but has become oh-so-trendy lately. It's a traditionally Hasidic neighborhood but has had an influx of hipster and artsy types.

2 of the country's best steakhouses are local spots, says site Thrillist

Didn't know where to put this, but I went to Piccolo Pete's last night for the first time. I am usually not a big meat eater, but got the 12 oz prime rib and loved it. I am amazed at how clean and big the inside of the restaurant is. It is a little dated but the food was excellent! Even better because the food was paid for by the seminar we went to.

I never understood that method of tenderizing meat. You can do a better job tenderizing meat by searing in the natural juices inside the steak and letting them cook and soften from within.

Why poke holes so the juices can escape?

Oops, I just realized I edited Jacob's post and not quoted it. Here is what I accidentally typed in his post (now removed).

I think they have great prime rib too. However the NY Strip is terrible. They send it through some tenderizer machine and it turns a great piece of meat in to bad piece of meat... That said, I always like going there, I just stick with the prime rib.

Omaha's classic steakhouses to compete in a steak-off
Sarah Baker Hansen: World-Herald staff writer wrote:During the month of March, diners can vote in the Old School Steak-Off by ordering a strip steak from at least two of the participating restaurants: Cascio’s, 1620 S. 10th St.; Gorat’s, 4917 Center St.; Piccolo Pete’s, 2202 S. 20th St.; and Johnny’s Cafe, 4702 S. 27th St.

Really glad that a place like Farmer Brown's made a list such as that!

I've actually been to a number of places on that list, and I can't remember a bad meal at any of them.

It's unfortunate that Farmer Brown's is way out west now. The papio location was more convenient.

My mistake. I didn't realize that the Waterloo location was the original. I only knew of the Farmer Brown's in Papillion, so when that closed and I saw them listed in Waterloo, I thought that the restaurant moved out West.

I never had been to the one in Papillion, but heard it didn't compare to the original.

My Grandpa went to the one in Papillion several times a week, so by default we always ended up at that one. We met him down there several times a year and always had a great meal.

However, I have never been to the one in Waterloo so I can't compare them.

I just suggested Farmer Brown's to someone who lives on 192nd, but never heard of the place. Is Farmer Brown's that under marketed? I had to think, have I ever heard/seen a single advertisement of the place? I've been going there for over 30 years and still hold it in my top 3 Steak Joints, maybe they want to keep it that way. The last time we were there, we had over an hour wait...

I think you answer your own question at some level. If you had an hour wait there is probably enough "marketing" in place.

I went to the Farmer Browns in Waterloo in the late 80's and saw two dead rats behind the sofa in the lobby. It didn't seem to bother the people I was with because they still ate out there all the time. I never liked the Farmer Browns in Waterloo but boy they had their legions of fans. Never understood it the place was not that good.

Someone just told me that their favorite place for steaks is in S. Lincoln, a place called Venue...
She said they age/marinate them for days...
Has anyone been there?

Omaha Prime twice. For some reason I didn't think of it on this thread.

It was very good both times. I'm very glad I was not paying though, very ex$pen$ive!
I love Fleming's. Yes, the price is not cheap but their food is so good that it makes it worthwhile. There are many places to get a good steak and Pink Poodle has the best Prime Rib but for ambience, quality food and service beyond reproach, Fleming's tops everywhere else in Omaha. IMHO, it far exceeds Drover. Drover is decent but nothing compared to Pink Poodle, Brother Sebastian's or a half-dozen really good steak houses in Omaha. With so many to choose from, I never bother with the Drover after the first time. If we are spending that kind of money, Fleming's is far better. I equate Drover with Lone Star or Outback in quality. Many people coming to Omaha hear how wonderful the Drover is but every single time they have eaten there and then at Bro. Sebastian's or Fleming's, they agree that Drover is second-rate. I have lived in Omaha for the last 8 years and eat out often. I was born and raised here and I know a good steak!

Flemming's is top notch indeed. It is pricey.. but you get what you pay for..

Jerico's is also a great place (among many) to get top notch beef in Omaha..

Just had a killer NY Strip at Anthony's last night. Very good. Pink Poodle is not up to Jerico's on the trips I have taken there. Drover is good, but really expensive. Brother Sebastian's is a solid reliable double play. I have yet to be blown away there, but have never been disappointed. Farmer Browns is also a solid double play. I don't go to Fleming's or the other "chop houses" because I would rather go to a local place than a chain.

It’s phenomenal. I usually bounce that somewhere in my top three steaks in the metro.

Applebee's makes a pretty mean steak. Well-done and buried in ketchup is the only way to eat a good steak. :)

I am of the opinion that an excellent restaurant meal is a relative balance of atmosphere, service, menu quality, food quality and cost. That’s true whether I am in the market for a sandwich or steak and lobster. For a sandwich or taco lunch the atmosphere and maybe the service is of lesser importance, but at dinner all of the qualities I mentioned come into relative equal play.
I’ve certainly enjoyed a few $75+ meals involving steaks in Omaha, but I have also enjoyed steak dinners costing under $35. Maybe the meal wasn’t quite as festive. The atmosphere was more basic, the service not quite as professional, the side dishes not quite as well executed, and/or the main course didn’t quite have that “wow” factor. But still I was very satisfied with my meal.
For a splurge steakhouse I would definitely recommend 801, Fleming’s, Sullivan’s and J. Gilbert’s. I have not tried The Committee, Jack Binon’s, Omaha Prime or Mahogany. I dislike the Drover and Charleston’s. Gorat’s has uneven quality. Brother Sebastian’s has a fun but kitschy atmosphere but otherwise it’s just “okay”.
For a less expensive option we really enjoy Longhorn and Firebird’s.
I note that at least 5 choices listed in the survey at the start of this thread have closed. Other credible choices aren’t on the list.
Maybe it’s time for a new survey?
