Another shitty license plate for Nebraska! Good job guys!
But seriously, they're going to replace it with something else now, right? I mean it's being made fun of all over the country...

Sometimes I wish I was in a parallel universe where Nebraska didn't change their license plates every 3 to 6 years and still used the county numbers for Douglas (1), Lancaster (2) and Sarpy (59) on them.
I mean, Washington's had the same plate design for the last 25 years-Mount Rainier.

I like the classic Colorado plate designs the best....
Mountains lend themselves well to plate design.
Which do you like the best?

I like the simplicity of Delaware and New York's plates too. I don't really like the ones that have some sort of screen printed image on them. They don't seem bold enogh.

Re: Idea For A Graphic Design For New License Plates In 2017
I made another custom Nebraska plate. I enlarged the images and used black serial codes instead of brown ones. I've even included a sunset-like effect. I'll admit this isn't the best design in the world. You may not like it, but I think we can all agree it's better than the one that will be issued starting next year.
Re: Idea For A Graphic Design For New License Plates In 2017
They should call the people who created Union Pacific, Creighton's or UNO's plates instead of letting some DMV bureaucrat design it next time. But I guess that the people who don't like it are just disparaging an iconic piece of this state's history: http://www.omaha.com/news/nebraska/like ... 244b1.html
Speaking of UNO, did they receive the 500 applications needed to get their plate approved yet?

Re: Idea For A Graphic Design For New License Plates In 2017
I think part of the problem is the plates no longer have the prisoner-pressed raised letter numbers they once had. They're just too one-dimensional now. I do like the New Mexico one.
It has the raised letter look or simulated raised letter look...hard to tell for sure.

The new Nebraska plates kind of remind me of these specialty plates you can get here in Illinois.

That's kind of disheartening since they did nothing to promote this at the hockey and basketball games this year after the first weekend. They should have had a table set up with someone handing out applications at every home hockey and basketball game. And, there should have been multiple reads during the games with a promotional graphic on the video board. They did none of that.
They had a table set up for the opening series against Air Force and nothing after that. It's pretty unforgivable, honestly. Sometimes, UNO's D-II organizational mentality creeps back up. After the press release in October and a table at the Air Force series, I've received one email about it and have seen a couple of facebook updates...That's it.
I get the feeling they may be holding on to my $75 for quite some time at this point.

I used the county numbers for Douglas, Lancaster and Sarpy counties because I don't like that they were discontinued. I know Sarpy didn't like to stack their 59s, but in an unintentional way, it was somewhat unique. Sometimes, even with less than 5 digits of serial, Sarpy would still stack their 59s.
Re: Idea For A Graphic Design For New License Plates In 2017
There's no way Sarpy is 59th in population anymore. Anyone know what their ranking is now?

Now that I think about it, it would easily have to be third, and at least a 100k behind LancasterHR Paperstacks wrote:My guess without doing any research is third.S33 wrote:There's no way Sarpy is 59th in population anymore. Anyone know what their ranking is now?

Re: Idea For A Graphic Design For New License Plates In 2017
To be fair, Sarpy was 59th in vehicle registration when those numbers were assigned way back in 1922. But the population grew so rapidly in the decades following largely in part due to Omaha.
If the numbers were reassigned, Sarpy would definitely be 3. Douglas would still be 1 and Lancaster would still be 2.

Re: Idea For A Graphic Design For New License Plates In 2017
This is completely overboard, but since the design is selected on even years, there's always going to be a primary election in the Spring. The state could select a block of design candidates and shoehorn a vote into the primary ballot. That would eliminate the issues seen in 2010 when they tried to put a vote up to the internet.

Looks like there may be a legislative movement to delay thing a year for the plate update.
Sounds unlikely that it will be successful though.

LINCOLN — A state senator is hoping the Legislature can step in and stop a controversial new license plate from being issued.

Nebraska will probably be sued by Michigan for using their copyrighted sower design, if they don't redo the plate design.

I was thinking the same thing. Absolute BS. I also loved their explanation as to why there was no public input. Didn't have time to set it up since Ricketts took office. He took office in January 2015. So basically they are saying in 14 months they couldn't put together a simple poll?jessep28 wrote:Before: They're already in production. Too bad. Here is a design I saw on Facebook:
I really like it but wish the First National building was a little taller. The artist said he wanted to make it taller, but the sticker needs to go above it.

The easiest thing they could do would just remodel the image off the right sower. Honestly I bet that's what they will do.

I think they should have your choice of different designs representing a unique nonprofit. Those are really popular in Nevada. It's much better than having a government employee pick some random design.GRANDPASMUCKER wrote:We don't care if it was bald headed Pete or some dim wit government employee that thought that Sower gay was a good idea, we just want it out of here. At the very least they should open a competition for graphic artists across the state to show off their talent.

New proposal:
Each person wanting to register a vehicle in Nebraska shall be responsible for designing their own license plate, or procuring services from a qualified graphic artist for a design, and submittal of the design to the state for production and issuance.

That is not completly new. That is what was done from 1905 - 1915
http://www.dmv.nebraska.gov/dvr/plates/plthistory.html
Motor vehicles were first registered in June 1905. Individuals made their own plates, and registrations were recorded with the Secretary of State. The plates were made of leather with metal numbers. This practice continued until 1915 when the Department of Motor Vehicles began issuing the plates. The Department assigned numbers to the plates, which were then made of metal. From 1915 to 1939 the plates were two colors, which changed every year. In 1922, the state established the practice of using prefix numbers to identify the counties in which vehicles were registered. Each county was assigned a number based on the number of registered vehicles in the county at that time. The county with the most vehicles, Douglas, was assigned the number 1; the county with the second highest number of vehicles, Lancaster, was assigned number 2; and so forth. From 1903 to 1920 only a single plate was issued for each vehicle. In 1921 two plates were issued for each vehicle.

Re: Idea For A Graphic Design For New License Plates In 2017
The state would still have to set the standards for the graphics, such as intelligibility, letter size, etc. Eventually, a few businesses would probably dominate the process, so if you were lazy, you could just order whatever plate design options you want from a catalog and place the order online.
